Jennifer FurtadoInternet Advertising - A New Way of Advertising
- by Jennifer Furtado
Out with the old, and on with the new! TV advertising is one of the biggest expenses major companies advertise today, along with Radio and Newspaper advertising. And they all still are very effective, but in today's world we are consistently being bombarded with advertising. Products such as the ipod, satellite radio, TiVo, spam and pop-up blockers have eliminated some of it but can not eliminate all of it because the internet have given advertising something to feed on for years to come.
Radio advertising is still effective today, but with products such as the apple ipod, and satellite radio it has given this tech savvy generation a way to avoid advertising on their way to work. TV will always be a powerful way to advertise, but with new technology today, products such as TiVo have made TV advertising look into other ways to advertise. Especially with a new generation of X and Y, who are eager to have the greatest and newest gadgets that major companies such as Dell, Apple, and Microsoft, have to offer. People today can now skip through commercials and avoid TV advertising altogether. How do advertisers target this market of people with advertising if they can¡¯t get them through their popular TV shows? The answer is simple. The internet is one huge playground for advertising that tech savvy generation X and Y cannot avoid. Almost every website you go to has some kind of advertising placement.
Who can advertise today online? Anyone with a personal or business website can advertise on the internet. An easy way of making money on your personal website is with Google.com's AdSense. When someone clicks on your Google ad, you get paid. Sounds effortless because it is effortless, it takes almost no time to set it up and to get it running. Google was smart when it came down to Myspace.com. You cannot advertise on your personal myspace account page, because there are too many visitors, and too many friends. This can result to be an easy scam to make too money, which effects the companies who advertise (since they are the ones who pay) with Google's other advertising program called Adwords.
A similar website to myspace.com is facebook.com. Both of these websites allow you to keep in contact with friends, family, school mates, and network with businesses and others. Facebook.com is taking advertising to another level, on your personal note, this is something that many are not looking forward to, and that is actually making a lot of people close out their facebook account altogether. Ads can now be targeted to your friends, family, and your facebook friends. Facebook thinks that if you announce that you like Denny's, U2, and the GAP. You not only advertise those products on your page for everyone to see, but most likely influence the people that you are affiliated with on facebook to like those products/companies too.
This is also makes it way too easy for identity theft. Someone that steals your identity not only steals your name but knows exactly who your friends are, your favorite places to eat, your favorite brands, and all your personal information. If you go to these websites, of course you can set some preferences, but something tells me that there are people out there that know how to get around things.
On the larger scale, internet has become one big ball of advertising. We tried to avoid it with pop up and spam blockers, but there is no way to avoid it entirely. Our current generation today has been so brain washed with advertising, that people today think more on the lines of their wants instead of their needs. On the positive side, without advertising a lot of new products and companies would not make it to today's out with the old and on with the new kind of world.
