Essay by Desiree Diana AmadeoDirectron Scholarship 2008 Essay No. 02
by Desiree Diana Amadeo
Major: Environmental / Chemical Engineering
Living in a generation that has always had access to global positioning systems, I often cringe while trying to imagine what schooling and work must have been like prior to the internet or even computers in general. As a computer fills every cubicle, office, household, briefcase, and backpack, it is becoming obsolete to find filing cabinets filled with documentation or history notes hand written in a spiral notebook. Why bother when you can access all the files you need on a single database or download your professor's notes from the class website? The internet is quickly becoming one of the highest demanding inventions in human history. As a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology I depend greatly upon the internet for school, social, and working endeavors.
By now, most colleges, high schools and middle schools make it a vital requirement for students to be enrolled in computer classes. I remember being taught how to make my own webpage in eighth grade. But the most important feature that I have used on the internet since middle school is research databases which give you access to journals, research papers, encyclopedias, and various books online. These educational search engines are more reliable than the generic Google, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, etc search engines which just pull up any similar matches on the World Wide Web. It is these various databases which aid in my research for both school projects and studies for work.
Fast forward to college and now you have the option of taking full semester classes online, accessing recorded lectures if you miss a class, and some professors even require you to access the class website to download homework assignments, note changes to the syllabus, and retrieve links to recommended reading material. My humanities professors have their students download essays onto a class forum so that fellow peers can read and make comments on each other's work from the convenience of their own dorm room. Being able to post information online comes in handy when everyone has busy schedules. The information posted is accessible over a period of time so that a reply can be given at the convenience of the respondent. The internet provides a huge convenience to the schedules of modern students, including myself.
The internet permits greater social networking between regional, national, and international individuals. Though some may argue that internet conversations are not as beneficial as face to face interaction, there is, however, the benefit of communicating with individuals around the world that one may never have had the opportunity to partake in otherwise. Popular social networks such as Facebook and Myspace can help individuals connect globally through similar interests, support groups, and hobbies. I frequently use Facebook to keep in touch with peers that live throughout the globe while classes are not in session. I am always thankful to come home to an email or a Facebook message to read about Launa's summer back in Syria or what project Kai may be working on in China this year. This communication is a perfect example of a faster exchange of information and knowledge to millions that plug in world wide.
Overall, I feel that I must attribute much of my success to the availability of the internet. Quick research on reliable databases saves me time from thumbing through numerous encyclopedias and documentation until I find useful data, allowing me more time to improve my work. Staying in touch with peers globally, as well as regularly checking the news, allows me to stay up-to-date on advancements made globally in my fields of study which are alterative energy and environmental sciences. As I continue to learn about the progress being made in different areas of the field, I can better assess what I may want to specialize in for a future career. Furthermore, if it wasn't for the internet then it would be near impossible attempting to find internships available in competitive engineering fields and foundations that award scholarships to hardworking individuals that need a little financial help to get through school. Thanks to the expediency of the internet, I was able to find the American Liberties Scholarship and I pray that my efforts are acknowledged in the end.
