Essay by Kristine BeynonDirectron Scholarship 2008 Essay No. 04by Kristine Beynon Current School: Butler Community College Current Major: Nursing program I am a highly qualified, MS Office proficient PC user. Data entry in excel, Documents in Word, Email in Outlook, Give me a project, and I'll get the job done! So, I clock in at 8am, ready to go... I turn on the pc... ten minutes or so later, after I'm booted up and ready to seize the day, I can't get in. What?! I can't remember my password!! No problem. I'll just call the help desk. So, after making sure I didn't just "lock myself out", we proceed to set me a "new" password. I rack my brain, and formulate a new identity. I'm ready to march forward... So, thirty minutes after my arrival, I'm logged on! But, wait... I can't open outlook to check my email, it says.... there is something wrong with my server! Help desk?!!!, I'm here to ensure your job security.... Ten minutes later (it's only 8:40, but I am having severe java withdrawal symptoms), I can now successfully read my boss' urgent request for an immediate meeting, twenty minutes ago, and again, with intonation, three minutes ago, in ALL CAPS! No problem. I'll shoot her an email. Now that it's up and running.... So, back to my pending project... The project I saved last Friday, before I went on vacation?! Why it's not in the shared drive, where I always keep it! Where did it go?!! I was only gone for a week. So, who moved it, and where? No one remembers doing anything at all, of course. Well, surprise. It's right here on my desktop, and it got there by itself. That's ok, I'll just move it over here... back to the shared drive, where it belongs. Then, I'll go back to the desktop and highlight and delete... There we go. So, back to the shared drive, pull up the file, and voila! A blank excel spreadsheet! No, please say this isn't really happening... There is no 'go back' available, It's not in the recycle bin.... Oh hey you, IT man walking by! Can you rescue me from impending disaster, just one more time?... What's that you say... I saved it as a "shortcut" and can't get it back? O me! O my! Can this useless pc fly?! I really am proficient but this machine it's oh so sly, If I really can't retrieve this file, I think I'm going to cry. It's ok, its just fine, I'll just start over...in a little while. The scanning is coming in, and the indexers await, But, I forgot to turn the scanner on first, and now I'll have to do it all over again! Here I am re booting and it's nearly 9:00! Alas, the screen finally appears, as bright as the morning sun, The only thing missing is my java and my honey bun! But, the images are skewed, sideways with grey lines throughout! Reboot, they say, reboot. At this point, frankly I don't give a hoot. I shut it down, the pc too, I count to ten plus one or two, I turn on the pc, (so ok, lets just do this one more time), I put in my new password, the machine whirs and clicks and purrs, I have a headache now, hope there is exedrin in my purse... Bingo, I'm really in business this time, the papers sing on through, live link has come back to life, and mine is nearly through, I really am proficient computers are my thing, I hear faintly in the distance, the mid morning music of the coffee machine, my boss has sent 3 emails, I'm suffering from severe caffeine withdrawal symptoms and my honey bun is cold. I've been giving much thought and consideration, to changing the direction of my career, I think I'll adjust my resume just a little here and a little there, that statement about "proficient" could be better described as non-existent, I think that file was somewhere on the desktop...
