Can You See Where This Is Taking Us?Directron Scholarship 2008 Essay No. 101
by April Michelle Wade
Currently Enrolled School: Vanderbilt University
Intended Major: Russian studies and theology
It's all on us.
In the year twenty-seventeen
The computer will be our queen
It's scary how the world turns cold
When everyone is using holograms, even the old.
Can you see where this is taking us?
Where kids don't take the bus
They sit at home on their laptop
Never with their friends on the black top
They never meet their teacher
They use emails to reach her
Can you see where this is taking us?
Men and women in the world never making a fuss
About the weight they've gained or the pounds to lose
Because thy don't go out for a lunch or take a cruise
They sit behind a desk doing everything in a virtual dream
They order their food online, even the coffee with cream
Can you see where this is taking us?
I see in my dreams little kids putting all of their trust
In MySpace, LiveJournal, Blogger, and Facebook
Spending all of their time online, never picking up a book
Texting, yes texting, all of their friends
Being illiterate happens to be the new trend
Can you see where this is taking us?
Now, the Internet, you can find what makes up the earth's crust
The educational possibilities of the cyber world is there
But would any kid care?
Their eyes are glued to that TV screen
They live in their own little dream.
Can you see where this is taking us?
Teens make video games a must
They sit there and learn how to rape, maim, and murder.
But they said that they would never really hurt her
Until crime became the new line
In places like Columbine
Can you see where this is taking us?
Now, what happens when these computers bust?
We get shot to the stone age, no warning, no sign
We get stuck in a cage that we made overnight
Economies crash, governments are overthrown
Just because one circuit was blown
Can you see where this is taking us?
Now when all of these shiny machines rust
In the stone age of our creation
Will we learn how to rebuild a nation
Without the help of CPUs
Or will we never learn from our abuse
Can you see where this is taking us?
