The Best Game Console System: WiiDirectron Scholarship 2008 Essay No. 106

Intended School: DeVry College of Technology - Phoenix
Intended Major: Computer Information Systems
When people decide to buy a game console system, the first question that comes to mind is which system to buy? There are three leading systems: the Wii, XBOX 360, and PS3? There are many reasons to buy one of these three great systems, but I would recommend that you buy the Wii. The reason is that the Wii has a lower initial cost for the system and its games, you also can use older Nintendo games on it, it is family oriented and some of the games in the system also help you exercise but it also has some of the best games in the industry.
The Wii system has sold way more units than the other two leading systems. The Wii console has sold 13.4 million units in the United States since it launched in November 2006. The XBOX 360 has sold 11.6 million units while the PS3, according to Sony, sold only 5.7 million units. Wii sales are about 2 million higher than the XBOX 360 and is more than double that of the PS3. The Wii has sold 44.96 million systems world wide and they expect to sell 50 million units by March 2009.
One reason the Wii it is selling better is the cost; the Wii system costs around $250.00, the XBOX 360 is about $300 and the PS3 is approximately $400 per system. The Wii is the least expensive of the three systems. This is good especially because the economy is down and people have less money. People would rather buy a cheaper game system than a more costly one, other things being about the same. The system's games are also less costly. In 2006 Wii games averaged around $40.00, games for the XBOX 360 average around $60.00, and PS3 games averaged around $55.00. All these prices have gone down in the past three years. If you had the GameCube you could use your old games on the Wii system. You could also buy games from the older systems like N64 and SNES for $5-$10 and play them on the Wii.

Another reason the Wii is selling better is that it has several games which let you exercise while playing the game; the first of its kind to do so. Using the Wii remote you can control the game using your movements with the remotes infrared detection. It can be used as your daily exercise while also having fun. You also don't have to go outside if it is hot and can get exercise when it is cold or snowing outside. People who need to lose weight or want to get fit should especially buy this system.. Most of the games are for all ages except for a few that may be tiring for some older people. One the biggest games the Wii has is the Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) games. The DDR games give you lots of exercise while practicing dancing.

Parents would most likely allow you to play this system more than the other two because its games are more family oriented and have less violence and adult content. This means that these Wii games can be played together with family and friends. Some people have more fun playing with their families and friends. They can find a game that the whole family can enjoy like Wii Sports or Wii Fit. It has parental controls to prevent kids from playing games that their parents would not want them to, based on the ratings. If the game's rating was higher then rating put by the parent then the system will not allow the child to play with out the correct password. However, you cannot block Nintendo Gamecube games since the system goes to Gamecube functionality.

The Wii system has newer version of most of the games with better graphics. Some examples are Madden, Tiger Woods, and many new Mario games. Many people buy the Nintendo systems just to play the Mario games. The Wii has many Mario games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Party 8, and Super Paper Mario. If someone likes the Mario games or any of the other games that Nintendo owns then they would probably want to buy the Wii more than the other two.
In conclusion, the Wii is the leading game system in the videogame console industry. Even though my brother and I bought the new XBOX, I would still recommend the Wii to my friends because of its great price, capability to use for exercise, and most importantly have fun with the numerous game titles.
