I Remember...Directron Scholarship 2008 Essay No. 12
by Dylan Dacy
Current School: Texas A&M University
I remember that sweet chorus of beeps and groans as my computer connected to this fascinating, new, publicly available service known as the World Wide Web. I remember trying to find a solid rhythm to the screeches, and I remember failing. I remember waiting for hours for pages to load. I remember anxiously heaving over the status bar as I saw it slide across the screen like a sloth. I remember when pop-ups came about, like a myriad of colorful fireworks bent on making your browser stop and watch the show. I remember when email became all the rage, and the subsequent viruses that became the new epidemics of the world. I remember feeling like a genius because I was the only one in my class that new about Google. I remember everyone thought that was a stupid name, and preferred a fellow named Jeeves. I remember when the teachers started assigning internet research homework, to try and teach us how to utilize this tool, when they themselves needed help. I remember when AIM 1.0 jumped on the information super highway, and I remember making my first screen name, which I have to this day. I remember watching the numbers of search results skyrocket over time. I remember when Xanga and Myspace and Facebook became the new means of adolescent communication. I remember watching drama after drama unfold on those sites. I remember learning HTML, and I remember forgetting it. I remember when I made my first website for a school assignment, and I remember getting an A. I remember when getting rid of spam became the new over the counter medicine. I remember when virus security companies duked it out on television. I remember when infomercials started giving websites out, and I remember eBay. I remember my switch to Firefox browser, and I remember my life getting easier. I remember when Wikipedia came about, and our oblivious teachers were wondering how we did so well on our research assignments. I remember YouTube's debut, and I remember the many hours of watching new flash animations and home videos on the school library's computer. I remember the exponential growth of online games that became available to us kids. I remember these games being the mortal enemy of any computer class teacher.
I remember teaching myself just how to use Windows 95. From Word to Access, from Excel to PowerPoint, I remember the epic of learning that operating system. I remember the class lessons on how to use Word and I remember being bored to tears. I remember the plethora of PowerPoint presentations I had to do, and I remember helping my peers. I remember making little flip books by drawing on PowerPoint slides and using the custom animations. I remember teaching my mother how to use these programs, and I remember it being excruciating. I remember when she accidently dragged a menu bar and undocked it, and I remember her screaming bloody murder and begging me to come fix the problem. I remember when my father took the job as computer programmer, and I remember him rising the ranks to his current job at IBM. I remember floppy disks as being the most convenient, inexpensive thing ever, and then I remember using them as ninja stars and plugging in my 32mb flash drive. I remember watching the prices of those flash drives plummeting with time, and I remember when 2 gb was a Iot of memory. I remember seeing memory storage devices getting smaller and smaller, just like the cell phones. I remember when the schools got the optical computer mouse because the kids kept stealing the little dense ball in the others. I remember when Windows XP wasn't very good, then I remember service pack 2.
I remember when my friend showed me his brand new iPod, the first version made, and I remember being awestruck. I remember observing the evolution of the iPod, and I remember not ever buying one. I remember when nobody knew about Apple at all, and I remember when the fad began. I remember buying my first laptop with scholarship money, and I remember it being so much fun. I remember my first call to technical support, and I remember wanting to jump out of the nearest window into a bed of glass.
But most of all, I remember the impact computers have had on my life. I remember computers making every task, every assignment, every time of boredom much easier, and much more enjoyable. I remember this profound influence, ever-changing, growing, developing into this grand network of universal communication, trade, management, and innovation. I remember carefully observing the world around me as it rapidly evolved into the technologically-dependent being it is, scrutinizing its intricacies, studying its quirks, and understanding its value. I remember being awestruck when learning about computers. I remember being dumbfounded when pondering about how we accomplished so much over the past couple decades. I remember being proud to be a part of this epic transition into a technologically-driven age. I remember my maturation as an individual as this whole concept wrapped up my life. I remember being gracious and thankful for all the hard work and plethora of trying times that the many men and women went through to provide the world with this incredible tool.
I remember like it was yesterday.
