Sluggish, lazy, sloth like attitudes are over with the physical workout one could get with the Wii. That's a great deal more than one could hope for from the PS3 or the XBOX 360. The Wii health games change the attitudes of children in a snap and have revolutionalized the gaming industry the same way DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) has for kids. This new craze just might be a new evolutionary break through for gaming consoles everywhere thanks to the unique game play of the Wii that allows gamers to get a good exercise too!
What sets the Wii apart from rival computer games is the way it allows players to mimic the physical aspects of a game such as golf, tennis, boxing or baseball, via a hand-held remote control unit that communicates with a sensor sitting on the television. Four main domains that are covered by Wii include: yoga, strength training, aerobic exercise, and balance training. And unlike other games that require little more activity than the pressing of thumbs and fingers on a console, Wii players must move, shake, even jump - backwards, forwards, side-wards and up - to get the highest scores. Another unique accessory that comes with a Wii kit is a scale that you can stand on while playing. It also gives you constant feedbacks about your performance and on details like your posture or strategy. You can set the game to display your weight, too, and according to Shigeru Miyamoto, who hatched the concept, the Wii Balance Board is actually one of the most accurate scales that money can buy. Nintendo being politically correct has designed Wii Fit to measure your body mass index or BMI as opposed to your weight. But after playing the Wii players complained of "aching backs, sore shoulders - even something some have dubbed "Wii elbow." Nintendo spokeswoman Perrin Kaplan downplayed the report, saying the company hadn't received any complaints from users about soreness. "If people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more," she said. "It was not meant to be a Jenny Craig supplement." But that's just one spokesman opinion another article in Times magazine quotes "A research team at the University of Toronto is developing a "therapeutic video game" to treat children who suffer from hemiplegic cerebral palsy, a condition that can partially paralyze one side of the body. If the children regularly use their weaker side, their motor function can improve. The problem is getting the children to do so outside of therapy sessions. Active video games might do the trick, thought William Li, an undergraduate engineering student at the University of Toronto who is conducting research at the university's Bloorview Kids Rehab teaching hospital." That may seem farfetched a video game that heals people too? Not so for Mary Jane Zamora, who lives in Redondo Beach, Calif., She was a victim of Breast Cancer since diagnosed in February of 2005. After a chemotherapy session she was feeling lethargic and couldn't manage to even stand up. That was before her daughters brought over a Wii they played bowling, tennis and golf. "It got a little exhausting," Zamora said but she was hooked to the fun little games and soon began playing on her own every day. Shortly after she joined a local bowling league and was named the league's Most Improved Player. Mrs. Zamora was elated she got her strength back having said "What this game did for me was encourage me that I could still do these kinds of things, It came around when I needed it. I can see where people could really benefit from being able to interact without having done too much physical exertion." But with all its health workouts the biggest change in the gamers is the weight loss. In a recent study researchers found that children burned three times as many calories playing "active" video games versus playing traditional hand-held video games. This doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the numerous benefits playing the Wii will bring us. But to further the proof of the Wii playing power Mickey DeLorenzo, a computer programmer in Philadelphia, lost 9 pounds in six weeks after playing the Wii for 30 minutes a day. Don't believe me? Check out his book The Wii Workout attributed to all his experiences on weight loss with the Wii. In fact the list of calories burned when playing the Wii as compared to the real sports played is amazing. When playing Wii Golf it's been found you burn 3.1 calories per minute while the real Golf burns 3.9 calories per minute. Likewise with Wii boxing when up to 7.2 calories per minute are burned as opposed to real boxing when it burns 10.2 calories per minute. Professor Tim Cable, director of the school of sport and exercise sciences, and his colleagues also found that an average 12.2 hours of gaming a week by 13 to 15-year-olds could yield up to 27lbs (12.25kg) weight loss a year. The scientists also commented that the Wii burnt 40 per cent more calories than using a PS3 console and Wii Sports burns 60 more calories per hour than while playing Xbox 360, another sedentary computer game. Nintendo is also getting more involved in family bonding as the gaming industry announced its intention to donate Wii systems and party packs to YMCA chapters around the United States, with the intention of sustaining the fire behind the Wii's body-moving, family-bonding healthy entertainment. The YMCA will use the Wii party packs to "help bridge the gap between parents and their kids" through a series of programs called Adventure Guides, which help promote positive long-term relationships among families. Many of the YMCA chapters will also incorporate active Wii games into their Healthy Kids Day events. "Consumers all over America are telling us the Wii helps them to stay active and fit and also gives them another reason to be together as a family," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Wii has quickly become a part of America's fitness plan, from bowling leagues for active seniors to kids and parents who sweat through Wii Sports pentathlons together." Another fitness center is also getting on the Wii bandwagon the Gravity fitness centre at Le Parker Meridien hotel in New York on West 57th Street decided they would transform their old squash court into a Wii Fit and Wii Sport room so that New Yorkers with small apartments have a place where they can comfortably play on the Wii. Not only does this Wii installation have a nice digital projector, Wii Fit and Wii Sports, they even have a personal trainer. They're not the only ones, several retirement homes feature Wii to allow elders to participate in motion-sensitive gaming. In addition, select Norwegian Cruise Line ships now feature Wii as on-board entertainment.
Not only is the Wii more physically better then the PS3 it also sells more the company has sold more Wii Fits than then ever before, and has hit 2 million units in November as well as in overall 8.6 million since it was in the market in November 2006. Play station was also good but facing decline of 19 % during the same period in the market. Wii Fit availability is the greatest problem of the stores. According to the records it showed in the NPD analysis there has been 10% increase in gaming console, games and accessories.
