Why Wii is a leading console over PS3 and XBOX 360Directron Scholarship 2008 Essay No. 14

Nintendo Wii debuted in 2006 and quickly became a popular item on the market, as shown by its difficulty to find in stores across the nation. Why and how did Wii become a popular item, outdoing Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's XBOX 360? The answer is left to those who have purchased the console.
From a personal perspective, I am a loyal customer to Microsoft, so when I decided to purchase a Nintendo Wii, there was something about it that caught my attention. I owned the Nintendo Game Cube for a few years and was looking to purchase a new console. I knew that both the XBOX 360 and PS3 were both fantastic game consoles and looked into them while I was deciding which console to buy. They both were appealing to me, but when I looked into the Wii, the potential I saw was much better than either XBOX or Play Station. I rarely play video games and the Wii interested me in that aspect because it was not necessarily for heavy-duty video gamers. I also had looked into the types of video games that each console featured; both PS3 and XBOX 360 featured violent, bloody games, of which I had no interest, whereas the Wii featured interactive, family-orientated gaming. This was another strike against Microsoft's and Sony's consoles. Being an owner of the Nintendo Game Cube, it also thought it was great to be able to play those games on the Wii with its backwards compatibility, unlike that of Play Station 3.
Not only can the Wii play games for Nintendo Game Cube, but one can download Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 games from the Wii's "Shop Channel". This is another selling feature because, in my case, there are several games that I like to play for Super Nintendo, such as "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past", "Super Mario World 2", and "Donkey Kong 3". I rarely play these games anymore because I did not have room to set up Super Nintendo and Game Cube in my room, so the Super Nintendo sat in the basement. But, with the Nintendo Wii, I can play these games by downloading them to the system and without having to change consoles. This is one of the smart features about the Wii making it advantageous over other consoles.
The truly interactive games that the Wii features are far more spectacular than those of the other gaming consoles. The Wii has remotes that are similar to computer mice instead of the standard game controllers. Whenever one moves the remote, the motions are directed to a sensor that interprets the way a person moved the remote. Not only is this revolutionary, but it is truly interactive. When playing "Wii Sports", one can hold the remote like a baseball bat and play the game of baseball just as one normally would out on a baseball field. The other games work this way; the ability to be played just as they would in real life. This is definitely a selling point for the Wii, with even more advantages than just total interactivity.
Because the players are playing the games just as they would in real life, they are getting the exercise just as they would in the real game. This is a definite advantage to the Wii over other consoles because parents would be more apt to purchase this console when they realize their children will not be able to lie on the couch and play video games. Players will be able to have fun and get some exercise at the same time. The idea of interactive gaming is also ideal in the sense that during the winter months, with snow on the ground, it is rather difficult to play baseball, tennis, or any other sport without having access to an indoor court or field. During these winter months, players can have fun playing these games and getting some exercise that they would not be able to get before.
The opportunity to work out while playing video games has intrigued people from young to small ages. Before purchasing my Wii, I read some reviews on the internet from people who had bought the console. One review in particular stands out in my mind. This family bought the Wii and invited an older couple over for dinner. After dinner, the family showed the couple their Wii and asked them to play it. The couple stated that they did not like video games and decided not to play. After watching the family for a while, they decided to play and realized how much fun the console was. After that, the couple even went out to the store to purchase their own Wii. The ease-of-use of the Wii and its outstanding features has even convinced older people to purchase the console, thus making it a hit console over Play Station 3 and XBOX 360.
The Wii's features were so convincing to me that I went out and purchased the console. Upon looking for one, I realized its limited availability, even after being on the market for a few years now. If that doesn't explain its popular demand then nothing will.
