Choosing the Perfect College LaptopDirectron Scholarship 2008 Essay No. 31
by Ryan Isemeyer
Current School: Senior at Stratford High school, Houston, Texas
Intended School: Kansas State University or Arizona State University
Intended Major: Aviation Pro Pilot
Choosing the so called "perfect laptop" is every new prospective college student's "kid in a toy store" scenario. The biggest question that most students face today is to decide between the unique, and modern tech savvy Apple, or the conventional yet stable Windows Based Laptop offered by companies such as Dell, Asus, Gateway, Toshiba and HP. Once the student has chosen there preference of an Apple or a Windows Based laptop, there needed demands can be fulfilled and they are also offered with endless opportunities and upgrades!

The requirements for a student's laptop is mostly dependent on there college student life and the degree they are pursuing. When I say student life it means asking if the college is in a suitable and safe enough area for you to be carrying around a 1,500 dollar laptop?, Will you be doing a lot of walking around from class to class? If that's the case a heavy laptop wouldn't be recommended unless you would like a shoulder massage from your local masseuse every Friday! If the student plans on pursuing a degree that is engineering orientated he/she should choose a laptop that would be suitable to run Auto Cad, a modern day program that assists in building projects, and for the program to run smoothly the student must recognize that they will need over 3GB of Memory, a 7200 RPM Hard drive and a dedicated 512 MB VGA in order to render there designs in a comfortable amount of time. If the student is doing more of an environmental class weight and portability should be the major factor as the student will be outside and walking around a lot, and for that case I would recommend the Acer Aspire One or the Asus EEE PC. Whatever the student may need for there college laptop, they can be guaranteed they will be receive 100% satisfaction with the choices that they are offered.

When it actually does come time to buy your laptop you have more sources to research and buy your laptop then you will ever need. Buying straight from the manufacturer allows you to customize your laptop .You are able to choose the amount of memory, the space of the hard drive, the type of LCD, the color of the laptop and the video card. For apple.com you primarily have the choice of the Mac book, a 13 inch slim eco friendly laptop and the other choice being "power house" Mac book Pro, a 15 inch laptop. Choosing the Mac book 13 inch you will then precede to 3 more choices, each with a different CPU and different Key Features.

As you continue with your selection of laptop you are offered to upgrade your hard drive, your RAM and Video card as well as being offered to buy docking stations, LCD Monitors, Printers and Additional software for your laptop. The great thing with apple is that during the summer months they offer great discounts on laptops for students that are entering college. Last year apple gave a free iPod for every laptop sold!
For Dell.com you are given a choice of over 15 types of laptops, including The Inspiron 13 and 15 inch, the Studio 15 and 17 inch, the XPS 13 and 15 Inch, The Inspiron mini 9 and 12 Inch, and of course the Alienware series. Dell's newest laptops known as the "Studio 15 and 17" were meant to be a mix of the XPS and Inspiron, an affordable, slick, high performing laptop. Once you choose the size of laptop you want, you then are presented with a screen somewhat similar to that of apple.com. The unique thing about dell though is that you have 40% more choice of upgrading system parts then what apple offers. Dell also offer great designs for the back of the LCD/Front cover were you are able to choose over 100 Designs, they include a series from (RED) which is a non-profit charity that sends proceedings to help Aids victims in Africa.

If you would like to get your laptop in your hands the day you purchase it you always have the option of purchasing the laptop in store from directron, circuit city or best buy to name a few. The good thing about this is that you are able to have the laptop in hands and start having fun with it as soon as you get home, the downside however is that you are not able to customize the laptop to your exact specifications and upgrading the memory or VGA yourself may void the warranty! Not to worry as Directron.com, Geek Squad and Firedog all offer upgrades for memory and hard drives. Companies such as Dell, HP, Sony and Apple researched that the average consumer would rather have there recently purchased product in hand then wait for it, so in response to the research these companies send up to 20 different laptops all different in there own way, that being color, hard drive, screen size, webcam quality and CPU Speed. Although you are limited to what you can buy there is quite a variety of laptops from you to choose in store and rush home to play with.

When the time comes for your first day of college, be sure to take care of your laptop and see it as an investment to your future. The reason I say this is because you will be using this laptop to help you progress through the most important 2/4 years of your life, the years that define you as a person, years that will hopefully make you a better person if not a smarter individual who is prepared to enter the real world after years of hard work and dedication!
