News from First Operation LAN Party

June 7, 2003. Saturday. 6:00 pm. Houston, TX.

Our first Operation LAN party was a big success despite some delays due to a few early technical issues. We had about 90 players/systems and near 150 visitors. All tournaments and competition were completed by 3:30 am the next morning. We gave out $3200-worth of products. Here are the winners:

Case Mod Contest, $223 total worth of 3 products
We had three serious contenders for this contest. Paul Stamatiou won the contest for his mod and installation of an LCD screen on the door of the Chieftec/Chenming Dragon case.

Street Fighter Showdown, $364 total worth of 6 products
Twelve people participated in this single-elimination game. Joaquin did an excellent job making that wood console box to host the hot rod. Each winner took away 3 prizes. Here are the winners:
1st Louis Yang
2nd Michael Nguyen

Battlefield 1942, $736 total worth of 9 products
Judging by the screen on the server, we had 12 people participated in this game. Probably quite a few people didn't get to play due to a network issue. Four rounds of play took place for about one hour. The winners were clearly leading the pack throughout the game. Each winner took home 3 prizes.
1st, Jerome Cortedo (=Magneto=, 14-year old)
2nd, Huan Huang (RuFFus, 19)
3rd, Michael Wei (Spyd3r, 17)

Counter Strike, $1895 total worth of 18 products
Eight teams participated in this 6v6 tournament on two servers: BH, CC-PC, CH4NK, ECONE, HIP, LOOTPACK, TOG, and UNBOUND. A single-elimination format was chosen by the team leaders. The winner was chosen after three rounds. Here are the maps played for each round: 1st - de_aztec, 2nd - de_inferno, and 3rd de_dustz. Many people suggested to play the standard 5v5 format next time.
Team TOG won all three rounds. Each winning member took home 3 prizes. The runner-up was Team HIP. Team TOG members include:
Michael Nguyen - sLiver
Kathy Nguyen - kathy
Hung Le - eXt
Justin Ruth - Mr. CAL-o
Thomas Bui - asdf
Rob Ramshur - Nark
