My First Impression of AltirisBlog by Dr. Michael, 10/30/2005Last week, I visited a customer - a school district in Houston area. The PC technician there showed me proudly the Altiris software the district has been using for a couple of years. Here are my first impression of the software. The software is a IT management tool for enterprises and large identities with large computer installation bases such as government and K12. It automates many aspects of the IT management tasks such as: (1) Desktop image management. All hard drive images are installed on a server and deployed through the network. If one desktop has a broken hard drive, the image can be easily restored through the network. If the network is fiber optical, the speed is not a problem. One can duplicate 300 images at one time. It may take 30 minutes. There is similar software to do this task; but Altiris does allot more. (2) IT Asset management. Actively track IT asset location, configuration, deployed versions, relationships, and historical information. Actively track software and hardware usage for reallocation and contract negotiation. Centrally manage all of your IT assets throughout their entire lifecycle. (3) Security and compliance management. Altiris® Security Management Suite™ improves system security posture by automating vulnerability audits and leveraging best-of-breed remediation tools. This is the only product suite that combines remediation tools with an automated assessment of antivirus software, security patches, industry-known vulnerabilities, personal firewall, system security configuration settings, and unauthorized hardware and software vulnerabilities, thereby reducing exposure to security threats while eliminating vulnerability root causes. (4) Client management - migrate, and troubleshoot clients within your environment from a central Web-based management console from virtually anywhere. (4) It works on not only desktops but also handhelds and servers. Server Management Suite gives IT administrators a comprehensive solution for managing business-critical servers and operations in their environment. Designed to simplify the entire server lifecycle, Server Management Suite provides deployment, management, and monitoring functions from a centralized console—automating operations, improving system availability, and reducing overall infrastructure costs. Sounds too good to be true? Such an extensive IT managment tool does not come without a price. First the cost is in $50k or above. Second the initial migration cost may be high due to labor involved in getting all the data and asset information into the database and the network upgrades necessary to assure the speed.
