Clustered Multi-PCs as SuperComputerCluster PC is also called Beowulf Clusters. It functions as a supercomputer, but at only a fraction of the cost. It is also easier to maintain, repair, and integrate than a conventional supercomputer. All the parts are from a conventional PC offering great flexibility, except they are installed in rack-mount cases and cabinets. It may also be faster than some of the supercomputers on the market. The picture on the left shows eight PCs clustered together in a rack-mount cabinet. What's a Cluster PC?: By linking multiple personal computers (or nodes) together via high-speed network adapters to function as a single system. Typically it includes 8, 16, 32, 64, or 128 PCs. Each PC may have two or four microprocessors for maximum computing power. Operating System: Linux is normally used in a cluster PC. The advantages of a Linux system include: Rapid Development. The entire cluster can be enclosed in a lock-able cabinet to prevent unauthorized or accidental entry. The cabinet makes the entire system look really nice and professional. (2) Do all the computers have to be identical? -- No, but it is preferred if they are identical for maintaince and operation optimiation purposes. (3) Do all computers in the cluster have to be running the same operating system? --Yes, it is the best, and probably the only choice. Besides Linux, NT would also work in a cluster environment. (4) Is this what a "cluster" can do?? --A simple answer is yes. You can make the pieces of the cluster to run different multimedia tasks. However, you need to know whether all your software packages would work with one specific operation system. Cluster PCs are connected with network cards and cables. It is very, very fast to transfer data between the PCs. You may not need to worry about the data transfer rates, because PC-cluster works like one single machine.
