Why My New Computer is Running Very Slow?
Your system may have been infected by spyware...
Spyware is "software that gathers information about a computer user and then transmits this information to an external entity without the knowledge or informed consent of the user."
Spyware can be avoided by using a good quality firewall and antivirus program, installing Windows updates and using a different web browser/OS.
Spyware can be removed by Ad-aware or Spybot or any of a number of good quality programs.
Warning: Some Spyware removal are actually Spyware.

A vague response to a vague question. The problem could be a virus, spyware, outdated drivers, wrong drivers, heat induced underclocking on intels, hard drive fragmentation, etc.

"A vague response to a vague question."
Exactly, like most SHEXs this is to be kind of vague. It is designed to be an easy starting point that many people over look.
"The problem could be a virus, spyware, outdated drivers, wrong drivers, heat induced underclocking on intels, hard drive fragmentation, etc."
On most customer systems I work with they have virus software, corect drivers and well built systems. The problem usaly is that no one warned them about spyware. Besides not of the things you listed except virus and spyware can slow a system down as much as spyware can.

i never used anti-virus my computing life -- just firewall properly set is enough -- virus - i only had it once -- the blaster worm when Bill (acting like fidel castro's dictator whims) force users to update their OS. the virus slipped thru ZoneAlarm and at that time i haven't loaded the firewall's update.

Only firewall is OK if a person disciplines himself/herself never to download anything. I know of some students who regularly download pictures to put into their word documents. Think of the new IM worm!
Only firewall is OK if one also runs some antivirus routinely after all downloads. Two such free online antivirus scans from reliable companies are:
1. Panda Activescan
2. Mcafee Freescan (you need to register first)
The problem of spywares/ trojans is very real now-a-days - I have encountered 3 within one week.
