Many students expand their view of the world during their time in college. Such growth often results from encounters between students who have lived different cultural, economic, or academic experiences. With your future growth in mind, describe a potential classmate that you believe you could learn from either within or outside a formal classroom environment.
BAM! "Come On!" is the first thing I hear as I step out of my car onto the tennis courts. As I walk towards my trunk to grab my tennis racket, I watch as my friend amazingly kills every ball that went towards his way. As he slams ball after ball, I always hear the loud thud of the ball hitting hard against the sweet spot of the racket. Watching the ball hit the ground with amazing spin and then fly out of the court, my friend's power and control is amazing. Each tennis stroke represents a stroke of a paint brush, and by the time he finishes the game, he has completed a masterpiece.
Watching my friend play tennis is the most inspirational first hand tennis experience of my life. I had been given tennis lessons long ago, but at the time, I did not understand the potential enjoyment it contained. Everyday I waited impatiently for each torturous lesson to end. I did not feel motivated to improve and surpass others in tennis. It became a chore for me to go out to the tennis courts each Friday to learn.
Now, a couple years later, my friend realizes that I have a little bit of tennis experience, so he decides to invite me to play with him and some of his other tennis friends. As I first start playing with them, I could barely keep up with the pace that they were hitting at, but I continue to play because each ball that was hit was simply amazing. Their strokes were the same as the professionals. Even if I'm not capable to continuously hit with them in a long enjoyable rally, just being able to see how they hit was enough. After the experience, I decide to play with them on a daily basis. Each time that I play with them, my hitting improves. My playing style becomes clearer, and I began to enjoy tennis more and more.
Being able to enjoyably play tennis is only one influence that my friend has had on me. As tennis matches are continuously aired on television, I become curious about each tournament. He would explain the details about each one of them, the name of the tournament, the country it is held in, the type of court they play on, and even how many players were invited to play. Whenever we watch a tennis tournament on the television together, he would quickly quiz me to see how much I've learned. After feeding me mounds of information about tennis, it becomes a habit for me to watch each and every tennis tournament possible aired on the television. Even if the tournaments weren't aired on TV, I would go online and search for as many videos of the tournament as possible.
My friend is a big influence on my life. I was able to change my perspective of something that I dislike to something that I greatly admire. Because of him, I am able to meet other people that have tennis as a common interest. Knowing that the University of Texas at Austin has a great diversity in its student population, I'm hoping to be influenced the same way.
