Tomasz ZarebczanEssays 07
-By Tomasz Zarebczan
Throughout my educational journey there have been multiple experiences and proceedings which have lead up to my senior year in Clifton High School. These events account for the diversity of knowledge, leadership traits and outstanding academics I strove to accomplish. With the help of teachers, family and friends, I have become successful in attaining everything I have ever desired. Nevertheless, this was (and is) only feasible with enormous amounts of patience and hard work, which I believe, are the qualities that make me the perseverant individual I am today. These building blocks, beyond doubt, have had constructive influences on my life, and in addition, they provide a secure foundation for partaking in NJIT's Honors College.
To begin with, immigrating to America from Poland, at the young age of four, was not a task of certain easiness for me. I was too young to entirely understand what the importance of such a life changing transition was, and thus, I was not aware of what I was getting myself into or how I would be able to adapt with the school system. For the most part, it was a successful changeover. I focused on the most critical aspect of life, which was academics; I knew that it was vital to achieve a higher level of education to make it in the world someday. Starting from kindergarten until about the end of 8th grade, I was an exceptional scholar, achieving to the best of my abilities, but as soon as freshman year of high school rolled around, my perspective on life and school changed for the worse.
Originally, I was uncertain why I had taken up some sort of an unusual attitude towards this significant phase of my life. I was a proficient scholar throughout my early education and I even achieved the privilege of enrolling into Honors classes in high school. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, I began to lose sight of my academic goals and ceased to focus on the importance of maintaining the high standards I had once established for myself. To my disappointment, I underachieved academically during that year and being a careless freshman has made an immense setback in my grade point average and class rank. After I came to the realization of my shoddy performance, it occurred to me that it was too late to change the past; a new future was my only option. Ironically, this unusual experience has made me a better and more thoughtful person. With a completely different and positively oriented mindset, I approached my sophomore year inclined to do well academically. I began to set aspirations for myself in life and in school; aspirations which were conceivable with a great deal of determination and will-power. I excelled to the best of my abilities during my sophomore year, and thus, I not only increased my GPA five whole points up to an eighty-nine, I also learned a large amount by paying attention to the teachers and executing my skills on evaluations. By continuing the hard work, I witnessed my GPA go up to a 91 after my junior year! It's even remarkable to me, nowadays, how such a careless freshman year changed my viewpoint towards a successful education and pursuit of a beneficial career.
Another significant phase of my life came after my sophomore year in high school when I found employment in a doctor's office. Funny thing is, before my employment, I had been helping the office with their computer system, where I both repaired hardware and enhanced software to fit their daily needs. Luckily, when the chance arose to fill a vacancy in the office, I was immediately selected as a prime candidate. I have been successfully working at the doctor's office since that summer, and till today, several encounters have taught me important morals and work ethic. Since I worked full time that summer, I had to engage in daily conversations with different types of people and fortunately enough, my communicating skills have been revolutionized by having the opportunity to deal with patients on a person-to-person basis. These communicating skills have also allowed me to increase my ability to hold a conversation on a professional level. As well as making money, a lot of responsibility, seriousness and honesty came with my position in the office because the community I had dealt with was real and had individual issues that needed immediate attention.
Socially and academically, my encounters with school and the real world have inscribed pages worth of knowledge, values and ideals. Wait, sorry to get off topic for a second, but did I forget to mention I'm "in love" with computers and technology? Ever since I acquired my first computer about seven years ago, I have not been able to stop using it or trying to "modify" it in some way, shape or form. Nonetheless, the experiences provided above separate me from other students in my school. I believe that my background can take me a long way in life and all the hard work can finally pay off when I'm accepted to the college I have dreamed of going as a young student: The New Jersey Institute of Technology. Attending the Honors Program at NJIT would be a privilege for me and I would definitely not take it for granted. When everything is all said and done, it's amazing how effort can make such a big difference and especially in my case, it has truly changed me into a better student, son and co-worker, but most importantly it has laid down an optimistic foundation for enrollment into the NJIT honors college and a foundation for my future.
