HP DeskJet and Professional Series Color Printers - Windows NT Systems Using NTFS will Allow Administrators to Print but Users Cannot
ISSUE: Windows NT 4.0 and Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server systems using the New Technology File System (NTFS) will allow system administrators to print, but users cannot print. Users will get errors like general protection fault in SPOOLSS, the driver is corrupt, or error messages from Dr. Watson.
NOTE: Windows Terminal Server (WTS) is an NT 4.0 variant that allows the server to run in a multiple-user mode. With WTS, the users are clients on Windows machines that have a graphical window open to the server. This environment allows multiple Windows machines, which may be low-end hardware machines running various Windows versions, to run NT applications from the server.
CAUSE: Windows NT 4.0 and WTS have the ability to control access to the hard drive by using NTFS. This local hard drive security is not available if the system is using a standard File Allocation Table (FAT). When the default NTFS permissions are changed to restrict user access or "lock" the system, the user may have difficulty accessing the printer. Usually the system administrator can print to the printer without problem, but when a user logs into the system and tries to print, error messages appear and the printer fails to respond. This is often caused by the user not having the appropriate permissions to access the necessary files for the print operations. A system administrator must change the permissions to allow the users access to these files.
SOLUTION: The information below shows the minimum access rights that the system administrator must set to allow users to have print capability on a "locked" system.
NOTE: The SYSTEMROOT directory referred to in the following table is WINNT by default. The system administrator needs to know the specific name of the root directory if the default name was not used.
HP Commercial Inkjet Printers - MS Word Printing With Custom Paper Sizes Results in Error, Margins out of Printable Region
ISSUE: Selecting and printing on a custom paper size from within MS Word that is larger than the default size of 8.5 x 11 inches results in the following error: "The margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?"
CAUSE: This error occurs because the custom paper size setting in the printer driver is set to 8.5 x 11 inches.
WORKAROUND: Set the custom paper size in the printer driver before launching MS Word by following these steps:
Select Start, Settings, and Printers.
Right-click the appropriate HP DeskJet printer icon and choose Properties in Windows 95 or choose Document Defaults in Windows NT.
Select the Setup tab and go to the paper size box.
Scroll to the Custom Size and select it. Enter the size of paper you want to print on and choose OK.
Close properties and the printer screens and Launch MS Word.
Select File, Page Setup. and then select the Paper Size tab.
Set your size to match the size set previously in the printer driver.
NOTE: The size settings in both MS Word and the printer driver must match exactly or the margin results will be uncertain.
How to Install the Printer Driver in Windows 98 or Millennium Edition when Connected with a USB Cable
QUESTION: Can the printer driver be installed in Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) when the printer is connected with a USB cable?
ANSWER: If a USB port is enabled on the computer, and the computer is running Windows 98 or Me, the printer can be connected to the USB chain of devices. If the computer's USB port is not enabled and properly configured, the printer will not work.
DETAILS: The sections below contain detailed installation information on connecting the printer to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port.
NOTE: Do not connect a USB and a parallel cable to the printer at the same time.
