How to Eliminate a Computer Virus?
Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Windows 95, and Windows 98 do not include antivirus programs, and do not include the ability to detect or remove computer viruses. A computer virus is a program file that is designed to replicate itself and avoid detection. A virus may try to avoid detection by disguising itself as a legitimate program. Viruses are often rewritten and adjusted so that they cannot be detected. Antivirus programs must be updated continuously to look for new and modified viruses. Viruses are the primary method of computer vandalism. This article includes information about how to eliminate a virus, including additional security-related information.
Because Windows Me, Windows 95, and Windows 98 do not include the ability to detect or remove computer viruses, you must obtain and install a third-party antivirus program to detect and remove a virus. For more information about viruses and security-related issues, please see the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.asp
How to Install New Hardware in Windows?
To install a manufacturer-supplied driver, follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Add New Hardware.

3. Click the type of hardware for which you are installing the driver, and then click Next.
4. Click Have Disk.
5. Type the path for the driver you are installing and click OK, or click Browse and locate the driver. You must type the path for or locate the Oemsetup.inf file from the manufacturer.
6. In the dialog box listing the .inf file, click OK. Click OK to continue.
7. Click the correct driver and then click OK.
8. Click Finish.
NOTE: If the new hardware is Plug and Play-compatible, you will need to click Next and then click Finish.

4. If you chose to have Windows detect your modem, Windows queries the serial ports on your computer looking for a modem. If Windows detects an incorrect modem, click Change, and select the appropriate manufacturer and model. Click Next, and then continue with step 7.
5. If you chose to select your modem manually, click the appropriate manufacturer and model, and then click Next.

Installing a CD-ROM or a Hard Disk
Installing a new drive such as a CD-ROM or hard disk involves opening your computer case, and handling internal cables and wiring. Because of this, you should not try to install a CD-ROM or hard disk unless you are already very familiar with the process. For information about how to install a CD-ROM or hard disk, contact the manufacturer of the device, or view the documentation included with your device.
Troubleshooting Problems with the Add New Hardware Wizard
You may receive the following error message while installing new hardware:
The specified location does not contain information about your hardware.
This error can occur if you select an incorrect hardware type or the driver is not Windows 95 or Windows 98-compatible.
If the driver is not Windows 95 or Windows 98-compatible, refer to the manufacturer's instructions for installing the driver, or contact the manufacturer for assistance.
Hard Disk Limited to 8-GB Partition?
SYMPTOMS
When you try to partition a drive that is larger than 8 gigabytes (GB) in size, the maximum partition size may be 8 GB.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the hard disk controller does not fully support the interrupt 13 extensions. This information applies to both IDE and SCSI hard disk drives.
RESOLUTION
Contact the drive controller's manufacturer for information about a possible BIOS upgrade to a version of the BIOS that fully supports interrupt 13 extensions.
MORE INFORMATION
In order for a hard disk that is larger than 8 GB and uses the FAT32 file system to be fully addressed, it must support interrupt 13 extensions. Io.sys tests for the presence of interrupt 13 extensions. If interrupt 13 extensions are not detected, the default CHS LBA limit of 7.9 GB is used.
To determine whether your BIOS supports interrupt 13 extensions, please refer to your computer's documentation or consult your computer's manufacturer.
Computer with Plug and Play Network Adapter Is Not Found on Network?
SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade to Windows 98 on a Microsoft Windows 95-based computer with a Plug and Play Network Interface Card (NIC) installed, your computer may not be visible in Network Neighborhood to other computers on the network.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX-compatible protocols may not bind to the Windows 98 server component (Vserver.vxd) if a resource used by the network adapter, such as an interrupt request line (IRQ), is reassigned by Plug and Play Configuration Manager during system initialization. Under these conditions, the computer does not announce or register its name on the network.
Your computer also does not internally register or export server and browser names to the network. As a result, the computer does not appear in Network Neighborhood, it does not recognize datagrams addressed to itself, and it does not allow remote computers to initiate connections.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 98 service pack that contains this fix.
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

To determine if you need to reinstall DirectX 6.1, use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (Dxdiag.exe) to check the DirectX file versions installed on your computer.
