Cannot Enter Standby or Hibernate After Computer Docks?
SYMPTOMS
When your computer enters Standby or Hibernation mode, it may stop responding (hang). Note that this behavior only occurs after you dock your computer. Also, if you press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, MSGSRV32 is listed as "not responding".
CAUSE
The behavior occurs if the computer has the standard floppy disk controller driver and a universal serial bus (USB) storage device (such as a USB memory stick drive) driver loaded. As part of the standby and hibernate process, a media check command is sent to storage devices by the Msgsrv32 process. The problem in this scenario is that the USB storage device has already been turned off. This causes Msgsrv32 to wait forever for completion of the command, and this causes the computer to hang.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, disable the standard floppy disk controller before the standby or hibernate process begins:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
2. On the Device Manager tab, click Standard Floppy Disk Controller, and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab, click to select the Disable in this hardware profile check box, click OK, and then click Close.
The PS/2 Mouse May Not Work After You Upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition?
SYMPTOMS
If you upgrade your computer to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and then you attempt to use your PS/2 mouse, your mouse may not work correctly or it may be completely disabled.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, open the Device Manager, remove the hardware device listing for the PS/2 mouse, and then restart your computer. Your computer can redetect the mouse and install the appropriate mouse driver. To use the keyboard to remove the mouse:
1. Press CTRL+ESC, use the arrow keys to click Settings, click Control Panel, and then press ENTER.
2. Use the arrow keys to click System, and then press ENTER.
3. Use the arrow keys to click the Device Manager tab, and then press the TAB key to click Computer.
4. Use the arrow keys to click Mouse, press the RIGHT ARROW key to expand the Mouse branch, and then press the DOWN ARROW key to select the mouse entry.
5. Press the TAB key to click the Remove button.
6. Press ENTER to remove the mouse, and then press ENTER when you are prompted to confirm the removal of the mouse.
7. Press the TAB key to click Close, and then restart your computer. Your mouse is redetected and reinstalled after your computer starts.
If the preceding steps do not resolve this behavior:
1. Physically remove the PS/2 mouse from the computer, and then replace it with a serial mouse.
2. Restart your computer. The computer detects and installs the serial mouse.
3. Remove the serial mouse from the computer, and then replace it with the PS/2 mouse.
4. Restart your computer. The computer detects and installs the PS/2 mouse.
MORE INFORMATION
This behavior may also occur if you transfer a hard disk (that has Windows Me installed) from one computer to another computer.
Performance Issue While Running ForeHelp?
SYMPTOMS
When you are running ForeHelp in Windows Millennium Edition (Me), certain operations may cause the performance of Windows to be degraded while constant hard disk activity occurs. Many copies of the ForeHelp database files are created in the _Restore\Temp folder. This results in slow Windows performance and uses up large amounts of storage space.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS
MORE INFORMATION
The System Restore feature watches for changes to system files and saves them before they are changed. Windows treats the ForeHelp database files as system files and backs them up every time they are written to.

Computer May Not Start Properly After You Use a System Restore Point?
SYMPTOMS
After you use the System Restore utility, your computer may not start properly or it may boot to the screen that says, "It is now safe to turn off your computer." When you restart the computer, the Windows Millennium (Me) Startup menu may appear, but selecting any of the menu commands may result in your computer's shutting down or in your receiving the following error message:
You must reinstall Windows
CAUSE
This problem can occur if you install SurfWatch, create a System Restore point, remove SurfWatch, and then restore your computer back to the System Restore point that you created while SurfWatch was installed.
WORKAROUND
1. Use an Emergency Boot Disk to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.
2. Type C:, and then press ENTER.
3. Type cd\windows\system, and then press ENTER.
4. Type ren sfn00001.dll net.drv, and then press ENTER.
5. Restart your computer.
You should be able to make a selection on the Windows Millennium (Me) Startup menu and start your computer normally. Contact SurfWatch to reset your password.
MORE INFORMATION
The SurfWatch installation renames the System.drv file on your computer to Net.drv and then installs its own version of the System.drv file. When you remove SurfWatch, the SurfWatch version of the System.drv file is deleted and the Net.drv file is renamed to System.drv.
When you restore to a point that you established before you removed SurfWatch, System Restore should rename the System.drv file to Net.drv. Instead, the System.drv file is renamed Sfn00001.dll, and the SurfWatch System.drv is retrieved from the data store. After you restart the computer, the Sfn0001.dll file is renamed to Net.dll. At startup, the SurfWatch version of the System.drv file cannot locate the Net.drv file, which results in the startup symptoms.
Replacing the System.drv file on the computer with the original version from the Windows Me source media may not resolve this behavior.
A password may be required to disable SurfWatch, start SurfWatch Manager, or remove SurfWatch from your computer. If you do not know the current SurfWatch password, ask SurfWatch technical support to remove the password.

Changing and Editing File Associations in Windows Millennium Edition?
MORE INFORMATION
NOTE: There is no Folder Options command when you click Start, and then point to Settings as in earlier versions of Windows. This item has been moved to Control Panel in Windows Me.
To Change a File Association
1. Right-click on the icon of the file you want to open, and then click Open With.
2. If there is only one program associated with this filetype, Open With is displayed and you can skip to step 3, If there is more than one program associated with this filetype, Open With expand to give you a choice of programs to open this file in. There is also the Choose Program option in the expanded menu, click Choose Program to open Open With.
3. In Open With you can select a program to open the current file. Select the Always use this program to open these files option to make this program the default to open when you double-click this type of file in the future. If you do not want to make this the default program that opens, leave the option empty.
4. Click OK and the file opens in the program you chose.
To Edit a File Association
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click the View All Control Panel Options link, if present.
3. Double-click Folder Options.
4. Click the File Types tab.
5. Click the file type whose association you want to change, and then click Advanced.
6. Click the action you want to edit, and then click Edit.
7. Edit the file association as necessary, and then click OK.
To Restore Default File Associations
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click the View All Control Panel Options link, if present.
3. Double-click Folder Options.
4. Click the File Types tab.
5. Click the file type whose association you want to restore, and then click Restore.
NOTE: This option is only available if the default value has been changed.
When a file association is changed, the original association is stored in the registry to provide the ability to undo the change. If this has happened, the file information on the File Types tab in the Folder Options tool includes a Restore option in place of the Advanced option. Only the initial file association can be restored. This means that if a file association is changed three times, the Restore option only restores the original file association.
