Create Boot Disks
To create a set of Setup boot disks for Windows 2000, run the Makeboot.exe tool from the Bootdisk folder on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM:
1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type drive:\bootdisk\makeboot a:, where drive is the letter of your CD-ROM drive, and then press ENTER.
NOTES
¡¤ You do not have to be running Windows 2000 to create the Setup Boot disks. A directory called \Bootdisk resides in the root of the Windows 2000 Setup CD. This directory contains two utilities capable of generating the 4 Setup Boot floppies. If you are booted into Windows 9x you will need to run the 32-bit version of this utility called makebt32.exe. If you are in DOS, or booted with a Windows 98 Startup Floppy that has access to the CDROM, you can use the 16-bit version called makeboot.exe.
¡¤ Disks created from the Windows 2000 Professional CD cannot be used with Windows 2000 Server; the reverse combination also does not work.
¡¤ Before deciding that a computer must be started from a CD or floppy disks, you should first try starting in safe mode on that computer.
¡¤ After starting a disabled computer from floppy disks, you can then use the Recovery Console or the Emergency Repair Disk (if you have prepared one).
Troubleshooting
The winnt /ox and winnt32 /ox commands that you can use to create Setup boot disks with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and earlier versions do not work with Windows 2000. In Windows 2000, the winnt32 /ox command starts Help, giving you more information about Winnt32.exe.
How do I deploy Office XP in a large organization?
Microsoft offers a broad array of resources to help IT professionals deploy Office XP easily and efficiently. See our Technical Resources section for detailed information¡ªthe Office XP Resource Kit, case studies, tools, expert assistance, and more.
Will I have any problems sharing Office XP files with people running previous versions of Office?
Documents created with Office XP can be used with Office 2000 and Office 97 (with the exception of Microsoft Access).
¡쉁ccess users: Access version 2002 will use the Access 2000 file format by default. If you choose to use the updated file format for Access 2002, those files will not work with Access 2000.
¡쉏ffice 95 users: You can choose to save your Office XP files in the Office 95 file format. Any files you save or create with Office XP and plan to open later in Office 95 must be saved in the Office 95 file format.
I have heard that I will need to activate my Office software once I have installed it. Why is that required and how does it work?
If you acquired OfficeXP at a retail store, (or, in some cases, if Office came installed on a new computer that you bought), you will need to activate it to continue to use the features and functionality it provides. Product activation is a new technology created to help protect consumers and software manufacturers by reducing software piracy; it helps verify that you have a genuine, high-quality, virus-free copy of OfficeXP that has not been used on more personal computers than is permitted by the software license.
Product activation is quick and simple. Until OfficeXP has been activated, you will see the Office Activation Wizard every time you start an OfficeXP program. (You can also access the Activation Wizard by clicking Activate Product from the Help menu of any Office product, or by going to the Windows Start menu, pointing to Programs, then to Microsoft Office Tools, and then clicking Activate Product.)
You can start Office XP up to 50 times before you have to activate it. After the fiftieth time, Office will go into reduced-functionality mode: You will be able to view and print existing documents, but you won't be able to edit existing documents or create new ones.
To learn more about activating Office, visit the Office XP Product Activation page. For detailed information about product activation, visit the Microsoft Product Activation page on the Piracy Basics site.
Can I open data files from non-Microsoft applications using Microsoft Office XP?
Office XP can open and convert files from many desktop productivity applications, including WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, and dBASE. However, some features of Office XP may not be compatible with other desktop productivity applications and vice versa.
What do I need to do to start trying Office XP?
The first time you start an Office XP Professional program, the easy-to-use Office Activation Wizard will automatically appear and walk you through the software activation process. Once you complete this process, the trial will be fully functional.
