I am having trouble with a system using a VIA chipset including a 686b southbridge and a Creative Sound Blaster Live card.
When the 686b southbridge was first released, motherboard manufacturers and VIA discovered a problem when trying to transfer files between the primary and the secondary IDE channels on motherboards using ultra-DMA, when a Sound Blaster Live was plugged in and drivers activated. This issue was caused because too much noise is transferred across the PCI bus by the Sound Blaster Live driver set. In an attempt to fix this issue, some motherboard manufacturers modified their BIOS. In some instances, these modifications to the BIOS caused a data corruption error even when not using a Sound Blaster Live. VIA released a patch which resolves this issue, which is incoroporated in the 4in1 drivers from the 4.31 version onwards. Motherboard manufacturers were advised to change the modifications made to thier BIOS to elimate the data corruption issue. If you are experiencing data corruption or lock up when transferring files between two IDE drives: 1) Make sure you have the latest BIOS from your motherboard manufacturer. 2) Make sure you have the latest 4in1 drivers 3) Make sure when you set up your system that you install the 4in1 drivers both before and after you install the SBL to make sure that the drivers see your SBL and install the correct patch. The patch will only install if the SBL is installed.

Please refer to Part B of the December 2001 Linux Application Notes available for download from the Linux User Guides Section.
I am having a problem with MIDI sound and I have AC97 onboard sound.
The VIA WDM driver does not support playing MIDI files. The midi file is translated by Microsoft's SWMIDI driver. SWMIDI.SYS passes midi files to PCM data and then send it to portcls.sys for playing. So this is not a VIA WDM driver issue. People with MIDI file issues should contact Microsoft for advice.
I use Win98SE and VIA AC97 integrated sound and I am having problems or cannot get the sound to work at all.
Make sure that the critical file wdmaud.sys is dated 3/21/2000 or newer. This Microsoft article lists several problems with the original Microsoft Windows 98SE WDM drivers including:
problems with USB microphones & sound recorders
MIDI file issues
volume control issues
audio stops working entirely after the PC has been in power-saving mode
and many more
Please read the article carefully and if you are experiencing one of the issues mentioned, download and install the Microsoft patch, Q242937.exe. Then un-install and re-install the VIA AC97 driver. Note that you must read the Microsoft article carefully as the hotfix is specifically only for the issues mentioned in the article.
I can't get sound to work in DOS.
Run windows, then adjust the volume in the sound mixer and then: "restart in MS-DOS mode"... The mixer value will be in the ac97 registers, so when you restart in msdos mode you will have sound.
Where can I find out about old VIA audio drivers for Microsoft Operating systems?
Right here! On 24 June VIA released the first ComboAudio driver. Prior to that if you had a VT8231 or VT82C686A or VT82C686B southbridge, there was the 68Audio_V231b driver or the 74mu170a for VT8233/VT8233A/VT8233C. The new driver combines those two drivers into the one package and adds support for the new VT8235 southbridge. Subsequent versions of the combo driver will add extra support and features. The difference between driver versions can always be found by reading the document that is linked to in the table on the MS OS audio driver page. Previous revisions of the Audio Combo driver:
ComboAudio_a1u300a.zip released 24 June 2002
ComboAudio_a1u311c.zip released 18 September 2002
ComboAudio_a1u3.20b.zip released 8 October 2002
