SHEX: Free Water for Plants and Gardens During a Drought.
Well here in Maryland as in most parts of the world we are having a drought. And that means no water for gardens and plants.
I have a 101 hobbies since I am out of work and one is gardening.
I stumbled on this tip 2 years ago.
When you turn on your AC water comes out and goes into the stationary basin. Simply take a large water bottle and put it under the drip. The condensation from the AC produces distilled water. But you wouldnt want to drink it as AC units produce bacteria and quite possible legionares desease.
In a typical day how much water do you think comes out?
1. 2 liters.
2. 3 liters.
3. 2 gallons.
SInce the water is made by you you own it and you can use it for whatever you want, including watering plants.

note: the water from the central AC is drained from the attic via 1.5-inch PVC down to the side of the house beside the condenser.
the finished project:
i used 3-inch PVC pipes cut into halves (lengthwise so it would look like a C-shape after you cut) and diverted the AC water to my front yard where the plants are.
to properly distribute the AC water, use a drill to make small holes on each side of the c-shaped-cut PVC. at each farthest ends of the cut pipes, you'll need to put a D-shaped plug/stopper properly secured with cement so the AC water is trapped/confined into the C-shape cut PVC.
when the trapped AC water reaches the small holes, water will drain into the earth/plants for systematic plants watering during summer.
these small holes will clogged over time -- do your home work by un-clogging the holes with common wire nail or any stick that fits into it.
cost of all materials in 1996 (harris county):
$15 (do-it-yourself)
the other effect of this is a fantastic thing -- stray pets and birds would visit your yard very often to drink -- they make poo in the yard and in the garden -- so that instead of using a bag of fertilizer (that covers 10,000 sq ft) i only use half the bag each application.
And, as always, you can post a question on the Directron Help Desk! (by122204)
