Empire Earth 2 hurls toward gamers
VU Games commits to sequel of top-selling RTS; game to get major E3 push.
.
(April 26, 2004)
Gamers will get another crack at taking over the world in 2005 with Empire Earth 2, the sequel to 2001's hit real-time strategy game that was announced today by Vivendi Universal Games.
Considering that Vivendi says the original game has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide, it's not surprising that the company is positioning Empire Earth 2 as one of its major titles for next year.
"We are going to great lengths to ensure that the sequel is in every way a worthy successor that builds upon the Empire Earth franchise," said Michael Pole, VU Games' executive vice president of worldwide studios, in a company statement
Empire Earth 2 is being developed by Mad Doc Software, which previously worked on Empire Earth: The Age of Conquest, the expansion pack for the first game, as well as the Dungeon Siege expansion Legends of Aranna. Mad Doc is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, close by to original Empire Earth developer Stainless Steel.
In the game, players will be able to guide one of 14 civilizations from the Stone Age to the future. Mad Doc promises a slew of features, including a new graphics engine, dynamic artificial intelligence that will not cheat, new gameplay elements such as ambient weather and seasons, and more eras and units. There are also new gameplay concepts, including territories, which will allow players to treat land as a resource.
Vivendi and Mad Doc also promise greater accessibility for casual gamers, and Empire Earth 2 will introduce a citizen manager that makes assigning citizens to jobs a lot easier. There will also be a new war system that will let players literally draw arrows on a map indicating where they want their forces to attack. And the game will introduce the crown system, which will temporarily reward players who achieve military, economic, imperialistic, or cultural dominance. Empire Earth 2 will also include nine multiplayer games, including "hot spots," which forces gamers to capture and hold strategic positions on the map.
Empire Earth 2 will be shown at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo. The game is scheduled to come out sometime next year. (ztj042604)

City of Villains and Auto Assault top NCsoft's E3 lineup
Two new games will join Guild Wars, Tabula Rasa, and Lineage II on the Los Angeles expo's show floor.
(April 23, 2004)
Joining the growing chorus of pre-E3 announcements, NCsoft unveiled its lineup for the looming game expo. Along with several previously announced titles--including Lineage II: The Chaotic Chronicle, Guild Wars, and Tabula Rasa (which was announced way back in 2001)--the Korean publisher will be showing off two all-new PC titles.
The first new game is Auto Assault, a postapocalyptic massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by NetDevil. Set in a world that's half Road Warrior and half Fallout, the game will let players customize their own cars, trucks, and motorcycles with a variety of engines, armor, and weapons. Gameplay will consist of missions and wandering through a wasteland full of mutants and bandits. Environments in the Havok engine-powered game will be completely destructible, and crashed cars will suffer realistic damage.
NCsoft's other new title is City of Villains, an expansion pack to its superhero MMORPG City of Heroes. As the title suggests, the Cryptic Studios-developed expansion will let gamers join the dark side of Paragon City. As supervillains, players will battle those infernal tights-bedecked do-gooders while building their own criminal empires. (Insert diabolical laugh here.)
NCsoft did not announce a release date for either City of Villains or Auto Assault. (ztj042404)

Microsoft deploying Thrones & Patriots demo
The trial version of Rise of Nations expansion gives taste of four-player real-time strategy and Alexander the Great campaign.
(April 23, 2004)
Just days before the release of Rise of Nations: Thrones & Patriots, Microsoft is offering a free demo of the anticipated expansion pack. Available on GameSpot DLX, the 244MB demo will give players a taste of the new features and content the pack will add to the real-time strategy game. The demo does not require gamers to own the original retail version of Rise of Nations.
In the demo, players can choose between four nations, including the all-new Persia. Besides a tutorial, the demo will feature three different random map types and part of the Alexander the Great campaign, which is one of the expansion pack's new historical campaigns.
Developed by Big Huge Games, Thrones & Patriots adds a bevy of new features and content to the original Rise of Nations (which is required to play the retail version). The pack will feature four new nations, including the Persians and the Americans, and four new historical campaigns, including the Napoleonic Era and the Cold War. More than 20 new units will also be featured, including Persian war elephants and US marines. (ztj042304)

Final NeoGeo game to be released in July
Samurai Spirits Zero Special will be the final game for the venerable arcade format.
(Apr. 19 2004)
TOKYO—According to retailers in Japan, SNKNeoGeo will release its final two home cartridge games for the NeoGeo in the upcoming months. The King of Fighters 2003 will be released on May 14, followed by Samurai Spirits Zero Special on July 15. Both cartridges will be retailed at 41,790 yen ($385), and will be produced only in a limited run, so retailers recommend customers pre-order the games.
The King Of Fighters 2003 has been operating in arcades since last December. The game featured a new tag-team system, and a new storyline featuring a main character that fights by using green flames. Samurai Spirits Zero Special is based on Samurai Spirits Zero with a number of minor adjustments, and the addition of historical bosses as playable characters. Samurai Spirits Zero Special is scheduled to hit arcades in Japan on April 22.
After Samurai Spirits Zero Special, SNK NeoGeo will release its arcade games on Sammy’s Atomiswave platform. Just as SNK NeoGeo released home cartridges a few months after their launch in arcades, games released on the Atomiswave will be ported to home consoles after a similar delay.

Battlefield 2 to storm PCs in spring 2005
DICE reveals that the "next generation" of the Battlefield PC franchise will feature modern weapons and vehicles.
(Apr. 19 2004)
Today, in a Swedish-language press release, Digital Illusions CE (aka DICE) announced the successor to Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. Currently carrying the working title of Battlefield 2, the PC shooter will be published by Electronic Arts under an agreement signed last year.
"Battlefield 2 builds on a new technical platform which will take us into the next generation of PC games," said DICE CEO Patrick Söderlund. Söderlund also said players of the game would notice a "marked improvement" in graphics and gameplay.
Battlefield 2 will be a different product from Battlefield: Modern Combat, the PlayStation 2 title announced last week. However, both games will feature the same three superpowers--China, the United States, and the newly formed Middle Eastern Coalition. Each power will have its own set of modern weapons and vehicles. The American arsenal will include the M4 assault rifle with the M203 grenade launcher, the Abrams tank, the Apache helicopter, and the Humvee.
According to DICE, Battlefield 2 will be released in spring 2005. GameSpot will have more details on this game as they become available. (jtz041904)

Sammy unveils its E3 lineup
Darkwatch, Spy Fiction, Iron Phoenix, The Shield, and Guilty Gear Isuka will be on display.
(April 19, 2004)
Today, Sammy studios became the latest publisher to unveil its E3 lineup. While the announcement had only one major surprise--that the game adaptation of The Shield will now be released for the Xbox--the list does give insight into what games the publisher is prepping for the upcoming year. The titles Sammy is showing include:
Darkwatch (PS2/Xbox--Spring 2005): Formerly Darkwatch: Curse of the West, Sammy's self-developed action horror game follows a fearless vampire hunter who's rustling bloodsuckers in the Old West.
The Shield (PS2/Xbox--Spring 2005): While it won't be accompanied by a rumored sex show, Point of View's adaptation of the FX television series will contain gritty realism. Billed as a "lost episode" of the series, the game will feature cast likenesses and voices from the hit TV show.
Spy Fiction (PS2--September 2004) Access Games' stealth actioner lets players both steal non-player characters' identities and engage in a menagerie of minigames. The game features character design by Last Exile's Renji Murata and a range of soon-to-be-revealed upgrades that aren't included in the recent Japanese release.
Iron Phoenix (Xbox--Holiday 2004) InterServ International's fighting game will let teams of virtual brawlers duke it out via Xbox Live. E3 will see the game's playable debut, with a LAN tournament open to all attendees.
Guilty Gear Isuka (PS2--Holiday 2004) Developed by Arc System Works, the two-fisted sequel to Guilty Gear X2 will sport four-player simultaneous play, combo customization, and all-new characters, arenas, and modes. (jtz041904)

PSP to PS3 via 802.11
Device will also use 802.11 Hot Spots to access Internet
(April 7th, 2004)
Wireless networking will connect the upcoming PSP to the PlayStation 3 and the Internet for online gaming fun and media access,
according to an article by gamesindustry.biz.
The site goes on to detail the capabilities such a device would have,
and says that the PSP will also rely on Hot Spots for 802.11 wireless fun.
Apparently Sony is trying to negotiate a deal in Japan that would allow PSP owners to pay one monthly fee to access all Hot Spots without having to worry about who the provider is.
What a fantastic idea. If this is true, Nintendo is going to be hard pressed to compete.
On the other hand, I think it's probably likely that the PSP is going to fracture the portable market,
creating one that is dedicated to adults and another dedicated to teens and younger kids. (ztj090404)
