Games for Linux
What kind of success have people had with different games under Linux? There are some obvious ones, like, Abuse, which was written for linux first, but what about others? Here's what I've found with a few:
Quake/Quake2: A bit buggy in X, it likes to display a half-width screen, but otherwise plays decently, if you can call it that. It is, however, happy in console mode, using SVGAlib.
Unreal Tournament: Very happy in X, no console version. In fact, I get better framerates in the linux version of UT than I get in the windows version of UT.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3: I haven't played it in Windows, but it's happy in linux. I can't compare it to the windows version as I haven't played the windows version.
Freecell under WINE: Happy, well, used to be, I haven't tested it in a while. That was the first program I ever ran under WINE, and probably the one I ran most often :P
Counterstrike/Halflife: I haven't been able to find the linux binaries for playing, only for dedicated servers, however, considering the number of CS servers out there running on linux machines, I'd expect that part to be quite happy on linux as well.
Does anyone have any experience with other games under Linux, either under WINE, or native?

There's good info in the WINE FAQ for setting up WINE under most distributions of linux. The wine homepage is at http://www.winehq.com
Unreal actually runs native, they've distributed binaries for linux. You can find those at http://www.unrealtournament.com> then follow the download link, there's information there on downloading the linux files.

Before they went under Loki Games ported alot of great games http://www.lokigames.com Tux Racer also went commercial and was improved quite a bit and is alot of fun http://www.tuxracer.com You might also try the commercial version of Wine just made for games, I have a subscription(which is only $5/month) and you get all updates for free http://www.transgaming.com I even was able to get Commandos working pretty well, you can goto their website and they have a database of all the games that are working with their version of WineX and how well they work. They even have a gaming version of Mandrake for sale which allows you to run The Sims almost perfectly under Linux.

Are you sure Loki games went under? I was reading something on the UT 2003 website about how Digital Extremes was looking forward to Loki porting UT 2k3 to linux for them, because they did such a fantastic job with standard UT. Are they possibly just doing contracts for specific companies, with those companies maintaining the full rights, including distribution costs, instead of maintaining their own storefront? All it says on the website is that they closed the store down.

Unix Games
Abuse is pretty cool. Its a side scrolling shooter with lots of action.
Theres also some type of new Gallaga type Game thats really cool. I forgot the name but its got tone of power ups and actions. Most of the three d games run best in Open GL mode.

RIP Loki /cry /verification
Hate to reminesce on the death of a greater software company. However, there is confirmation - this is a direct paste from their website.
* Finally, some have asked about the actual process of closing down. As you may know, Loki filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition on August 3, 2001. We will be filing a motion to convert the case to a Chapter 7--a liquidation. At that time all of Loki's assets will be transfered to a U.S. Trustee appointed by the Court. The Trustee's job will be to sell those assets to the highest bidder.
Oh well. Least I invested (very cheaply at that) in some of their retail box games before they went under for Linux. For those interested I have Railroad Tycoon 2, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and some others. Give me a tell if really interested.

Loki said they had a hard time selling games to Nix users because they felt like the GNU entitled everyone to free games. They said the games dont apply to the GNU portion of the Kernal. I dont know if thats true or not.
Alls I know is times are tuff and people dont want to even try Unix they just want to install Windows. For alot of people its just to difficult to change.
I think Change is an important part of life. If I said today I can not or will not change. I could pretty much give up ever finding a job but I belive that the fact I am willing to change and work opens me up to a world of new possibilities. I hope.
I think the fact that some companies refuse to change has locked their fate. IBM and XEROX.

Well, I'm not sure about the current situation with Loki and the like, but I believe they're still doing work, just under a different name, or not doign the commercial thing anymore, just working for commercial companies on a contract basis, because it has been stated that loki will be working with digital extremes and epic megagames to port UT 2003 to Linux. I guess we're just going to have to see what happens to that end.

Loki Games
I was so disappointed when they went under! I had been playing their Heroes of Might and Magic demo and was getting ready to buy it even. *sniff*
Oh well. Guess I'll just stick with the Windoze version for now.
I do hope they port more games to Linux. If anyone ever gets a lead on where to get 'em, let me know.
