Glossary - Green, Saving Power
Energy Star - ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.
RoHS -
The RoHS Directive stands for "the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment". This Directive bans the placing on the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.
80 PLUS - The 80 PLUS performance specification requires multi-output power supplies in computers and servers to be 80% or greater energy efficient at 20%, 50% and 100% of rated load with a true power factor of 0.9 or greater. This makes an 80 PLUS certified power supply substantially more efficient than typical power supplies and creates a unique market differentiation opportunity for power supply and computer manufacturers.
Enthusiast System Architecture (ESA) - The Nvidia ESA
is the industry’s first open-standard PC monitoring and control protocol for real-time communication and control of system thermal, electrical, acoustic and operating characteristics.
Pulse width modulation (PWM) is a powerful technique for controlling analog circuits with a processor's digital outputs. PWM is employed in a wide variety of applications, ranging from measurement and communications to power control and conversion.
ASUS EPU (Energy Processing Unit)
Enables the Most Energy Efficient Motherboard in the World
The ASUS EPU utilizes innovative technology to digitally monitor and finetune the CPU power supply with improved VR responses in heavy or light loadings. Working together with AI Gear 3, it automatically provides power for higher performance or improves efficiency by 50% when the PC is running low intensity applications - helping you attain the best possible power efficiency and energy savings of up to 80.23% to help save the environment.

Featuring the industry's first consumer desktop motherboard design to introduce 2 ounces of copper for both the Power and Ground layers, delivering a dramatically lower system temperature, improved energy efficiency and enhanced stability for overclocking.

MSI DrMOS
DrMOS is a new generation core power source design. MSI has taken one step ahead to integrate DrMOS into the new chipset series. The unique DrMOS not only provides superior energy efficiency and low temperature operation, but also offers high computing power and performance.
GreenPower - DrMOS plus MSI GreenPower Technology is the most efficient power saving solution for end-users.
XpressCool - DrMOS offers lower working temperature, no more high-speed fan needed and brings less noise.
Rapidboost - DrMOS delivers the high quality power transfer to bring the stable overclocking environment

MSI Hybrid Freezer Graphics Card
The Hybrid Freezer cooling technology has a built-in fan interior fan for temperature control and utilizes 6mm thick heat pipes for effective thermal conductivity. The temperature will continue to monitor the heat of the GPU. When system executing 3D application and the temperature is higher, the fan will start rotating and will quickly disperse the heat. As executing 2D applications and the temperature is lower, the fan will automatically stop. The heat pipes and fins will remove the GPU's heat. Moreover, MSI did not hesitate to utilize the 6mm thick heat pipes even if it cost more. Compared to the 5mm which is usually used in heat pipes, the 6mm thick heat pipes offer 20% more conducting power and provide the most efficient radiation speed.
AMD Cool 'n' Quiet 2.0 Technology
With the next generation of award-winning power saving technology, Cool 'n' Quiet 2.0 technology reduces heat and noise so you can experience amazing performance without distraction. Combined with core enhancements, included in the AMD Phenom processor, that can improve overall power savings, deliver seamless multitasking and energy efficiency. Work, play, talk, and share on a PC that’s seen, not heard.

Intel Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST)
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology is an advanced means of enabling very high performance while also meeting the power-conservation needs of mobile systems. Conventional Intel SpeedStep Technology switches both voltage and frequency in tandem between high and low levels in response to processor load. Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology builds upon that architecture using design strategies that include the following:
- Separation between Voltage and Frequency Changes. By stepping voltage up and down in small increments separately from frequency changes, the processor is able to reduce periods of system unavailability (which occur during frequency change). Thus, the system is able to transition between voltage and frequency states more often, providing improved power/performance balance.
- Clock Partitioning and Recovery. The bus clock continues running during state transition, even when the core clock and Phase-Locked Loop are stopped, which allows logic to remain active. The core clock is also able to restart far more quickly under Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology than under previous architectures.
WD GreenPower
WD’s GreenPower technology platform is the first 3.5-inch hard drive platform designed with power savings as the primary attribute. These drives deliver average drive power savings of 4-5 watts over competitors’ drives, ultra-cool, quiet operation and solid performance. The following technologies enable our GreenPower technology platform:
- IntelliPower:
A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. For each drive model, WD may use a different, invariable RPM.
Drives featuring GreenPower technology consume less current during start up allowing more drives to spin up simultaneously resulting in faster system readiness which is a big plus for enterprise customers.
- IntelliPark:
Delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading recording heads during idle to reduce aerodynamic drag, and disengages read/write channel electronics.
- IntelliSeek:
Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
