Size does matter: Toshiba's 100GB notebook HD
(April 23, 2004)
Toshiba, on Thursday unveiled its 100GB storage vault, the MK1031GAS. This hard disk is going to be exclusively used for notebooks. It will pack a meaty 20GB more capacity than Toshiba?s current biggest drives for notebooks. It is the first 2.5-inch drive from any manufacturer to store 100 Gigabytes in a notebook, according to Toshiba.
This hard disk is aimed at a growing group of notebook users who are on the look out for notebooks that have 'close to desktop'performances with regards to storage capacity for multimedia tasks, like video editing and gaming.
It has been reported that the company has employed a new thin-film technology on both the head and platter. This film technology has increased the head's sensitivity and allowed engineers to increase the area density to 80 Gigabits per square inch from the current 65 Gigabits per square inch on Toshiba's 80 Gigabyte notebook drives. The drive contains two 2.5-inch platters to bring the total capacity to 100 Gigabytes. The drive has an ATA-6 interface and speed of 4,200 rpm.
Buyers who are eager to get their hands on this hard drive will have to wait a little longer as Toshiba plans to begin sample production of the new drive in May and expects commercial production to start during the third quarter of this year. It is also reported that the when Toshiba starts production of the device for customer evaluation, they would sell the product at approximately Rs 48,000. The company though, has no estimate for the final price when mass production begins.
Since this device is new and has not even entered International markets yet, it will definitely take a little time for its presence to be felt in the Indian market. Till then notebook users will have to make do with 80 Gigabyte hard drives. The bigger, the better, right? (ztj042604)

Toshiba Unveiled 100GB 2.5" HDD
The World's Tiniest 100GB Disk Drive Announced
(April 22, 2004)
Toshiba Corporation announced the highest-capacity 2.5" hard disk drive that will serve laptops and other small form-factor applications. For the first time ever 100GB of data may be stored in a box that is smaller than a pack of cigarettes.
Toshiba's new MK1031GAS hard disk drive is a 100GB device with 8MB cache and 4200rpm motor. The world's first 100GB 2.5" HDD was achieved by using 2 advanced platters with 80Gb of data per square inch areal density. The key to achieving this was replacing the Pico Sliders attached to the drive's heads, and which maintain the appropriate distance from the disk during read and write operations, with Femto Sliders that are 35% smaller and much lighter. Advances were also achieved in the thin-film technology for both the head and the platter, according to Toshiba.
The new drive's shock resistance of 3,185 m/s2 (325G, 2msec) is 50% higher than in Toshiba's current 2.5" HDD, due to employment of the smaller, lighter Femto Sliders in combination with a lighter head-suspension and head arm.
Power consumption of the "MK1031GAS" is approximately 20% lower on average than the company's current drive due to pulse width modulation (PWM) that controls disk rotation speed by switching the power supply to the spindle motor on and off at a certain frequency. A DC-DC converter is also used in the power unit. Low noise operation, as low as 21dB in an idle state, is achieved by an optimized sinusoidal waveform to control the operational current of the spindle motor.
Samples of the MK1031GAS will be available in May.

Intel Ignites Serial ATA-300
Faster HDD Interconnect Brought to Life
(April 20, 2004)
The Serial ATA Working Group announced Wednesday two specification development milestones at the Intel Developer Forum in Barcelona, Spain. One centers on doubling the signalling speed for Serial ATA, the other on new cable and connector solutions to support additional applications and usage models.
The specification for the second generation Serial ATA signaling speed - 3Gb/s - has been completed and the release candidate of that specification has started its ratification process. The second-generation speed of 3Gb/s (300MB/s) is double that of the first-generation Serial ATA speed which is 1.5Gb/s (150MB/s).
A selection of Serial ATA products supporting 3Gbps signaling speeds have already been announced. Once the ratification process is complete in about 30 days, those products that comply with the spec can be marketed as 3Gb/s Serial ATA products, according to Intel. Among the features of the enhanced technology is that no new cables and connectors are required to support the higher signaling speeds.
In addition to doubling the speed for the internal PHY originally defined in the Serial ATA 1.0 specification, the new specification also defines a higher-power version of it for longer-haul external data-center use. The external PHY version defined in the specification only impacts box-to-box applications (not used as a direct disk drive connection) and has been defined to match the electrical parameters for the SAS PHY.
Volume 2 of the SATA cables and connectors specification adds several new cabling options:
An internal multi-lane cable and connector assembly for streamlining connections between multiple internal host ports and internal devices or short backplane.
An external consumer cable and connector solution that accommodates use of Serial ATA with external storage devices.
External multi-lane data-center cable and connector solution for connecting multiple Serial ATA channels between chassis in a data-center.
Products based on the new cable and connector ingredients are expected to appear by the end of the year.
In a clear indication of strong industry adoption of Serial ATA, a plugfest last month saw participation from a record 200-plus representatives from 57 companies. (ztj042104)

Rev up with iOmega's Rev: Removable Storage Hard Drive
(April 13, 2004)
iOmega today launched its Rev (Asia - Pacific region), a portable Hard Disk Drive which is touted as a viable alternative to Tape Back Up's. Rev is based on its Removable Rigid Disk (RRD) technology.
This drive sports real snazzy looks, with the disks being smaller than a deck of cards.
Dubbed the Iomega REV, the system comes with either an external USB 2.0 or internal ATAPI standard. Both versions offer 35GB of native space (90GB if compressed, using the bundled Iomega Automatic Backup Pro software).
"The new Iomega REV drive is a unique and versatile product that changes the rules of data backup, combining superior reliability and performance with breakthrough pricing," said Chris McPherson, Managing Director, Asia Pacific Iomega Corporation. "Backing up to tape has always involved compromises because tape is a relatively fragile, slow and expensive linear-access technology. Iomega's new REV drive makes backup and system or file recovery tasks faster, easier and less costly. Small business owners and IT managers will save immediately in terms of labour, hardware costs and system downtime." (ztj150404)
