Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2002

The 2002 Hong Kong Electronics Fair was held held from October 11 to 14 at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. Visitors to the Fair were greeted by the latest hi-tech offerings from 1,742 exhibitors, mostly from Hong Kong and mainland China.

A host of new technological innovations was unveiled, ranging from simple personal electronic gadgets to sophisticated A/V, security and telecom appliances and accessories.

The fair attracted a total of 47,224 visitors and buyers. Of these, 25,845 or 54.7 percent were from overseas. Event organizer Trade Development Council said the number of overseas visitors rose by a healthy 27 percent. Mainland China topped the visitor count with 6,000 delegates. The United States came second with 2,213. Taiwan representatives numbered 2,213.

Here are some highlights from the show.

Notable products include Shinco International AV Co. Ltd's mini DVD home theater set consisting of a DVD receiver and a 5.1 speaker system with 1,100W PMPO. Sansui H.K. Ltd's model boasts a DVD receiver with three disc trays.

A new home theater combo from Welton Electronics Ltd includes an RDS tuner and floor-standing speaker cabinets. Mico Electric (HK) Ltd unveiled a space-saving 2.1-channel DVD receiver system with a slot-in DVD tray.

The new home-use DVD offerings were multifunction and often equipped with digital amplifiers and PLL tuners. The latest DVD receiver from Shinco is 48mm tall and incorporates a PLL tuner. Sansui's DVD player also has a TV tuner plus a hard disk for recording video programs. Many of the new models are top-loading.

Car systems were big attractions, as well. The new car DVD receiver from Shinco can pick up TV signals. Best Glory Industrial Ltd offered a car DVD player with a PLL tuner and a fully motorized TFT-LCD monitor. A new series from Edton Precision Technologies Ltd featured new CD changer controls.

Many makers offered fresh takes on standard products, such as MP3 players with recording functions.

Hong Kong-based Imaginative Design Operation Co. Ltd showed off an MP3/WMA player with a recorder and FM radio. Perception Digital Ltd unveiled a 128M model that can record for up to nine hours, and another with a slot for a SmartMedia memory card.

Imaginative Design also previewed a multimedia player that allows users to listen to music while viewing digital photos on a 1.8-inch TFT LCD screen. The model is compatible with MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, JPEG, TIFF, GIF and BMP file formats.

Recordable audio players for home and car use were also available. Perception released a CD player with a one-touch CD-R/CD-RW burning capability and a 20G hard disk for recording. The company's new digital recordable car Jukebox can record up to 500 CDs or 300 hours of programming on its 20G removable hard disk.

A subtheme at the show was the use of aluminum for speaker systems and accessories such as headphones.

The new speakers from First Audio Mfg Ltd come in aluminum cabinets. Welton Electronics also introduced aluminum-coated wooden speaker cabinets, and Sansui's new home speaker system comes with an aluminum housing and a metal grille.

Wireless makers were out in force. Uni-Art Precise Products Ltd showed its new wireless stereo speaker systems and Artchief Industries Ltd featured a wireless 2.1-channel subwoofer speaker system.

New wireless stereo headphones from Uni-Art and Telean Technology Ltd featured PLL technology and superior surround sound capabilities.

Next fair is scheduled for October 13 to 16, 2003 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The concurrent Hong Kong International Lighting Fair will be held from October 27 to 30 in 2003.
