Part III. BIOS and OS

How to Build a Win 2000 System? By Lee Penrod

BIOS Configuration

Flip the switch on the back of the powersupply from o(off) to -(on). This should make the led near the AGP card on the motherboard glow.

If you have a case speaker installed, you should hear one beep, and the computer should post. If nothing happens make sure you have the case I/O panel on the motherboard properly connected.

As soon as you see the memory start to count hit DEL on the keyboard to enter bios. By default the A7V does a quick post, so if you miss the count and get an error, just reset and try again.

Hit F5, and to load the defaults. Set your system time, and system date as needed. Press the left arrow key once to go to the Advanced menu. Check and make sure that the DRAM Frequency is set to the speed of your memory. (133). System Performance setting should be set to Optimal (note: if your bios is below version 1005 you may want to set this it to Normal temporarily, and then update your bios to the newest version before installing the operating system). Since we are using 384 Megs of ram we should increase the Graphics Aperture Size. To do this go down to CHIP Configuration, and hit enter. On the CHIP Configuration Menu hold the down arrow until you get to Graphics Aperture Size. Change it from 64MB to 128MB. Aperture should be 50% or less of your memory. (Higher numbers can increase graphic performance in some situations). Hit ESC to leave the CHIP Configuration Menu.

Press the left arrow key again to go to the power menu. Go down to “Hardware Monitor?and press enter. Check and make sure your CPU temperature is below 50C. If it is higher turn off the system and re-install the heatsink. The temperature of the test system read 44C, and that was with an ambient temperature at an uncomfortable 85F.

If you want you can also switch the -12-voltage monitor, and -5 voltage monitor on. Generally these values are unimportant however.

Now hit the ESC key, and go over to the Boot menu. Set ATAPI CD-ROM to the CD-ROM drive. With the delta this is “ATAPI 52X CDROM?Change Other Boot Device from INT18 Device to Onboard ATA100 boot device/SCSI.

Go down to Plug & Play OS and set it to Yes, since Windows 2000 is plug and play.

Change primary VGA BIOS from PCI Card to AGP Card.

Go over to the exit menu and Exit Saving Changes.

Installing Windows 2000                                                 | Go to Top |

Insert your first windows 2000 setup disk, and start your computer. Follow the prompts, changing disks as needed until you get to the Welcome to Setup menu. If you do not have the four Windows 2000 startup disks, see the appendix of this guide for instructions on creating them.

At the menu hit enter and read the licensing agreement. When ready press F8.

You will get a menu showing the two hard drives. Select the unpartitioned space on drive 0 and press C. Hit enter for max size.

Now you have C: New (Unformatted) select it and hit enter to install windows 2000.

You will now get a menu asking if you want to use the NTFS file system or the FAT file system. Since this system will be mainly used with Windows 98 based systems the FAT file system is preferable. The NTFS system is a bit more secure, but it has compatibility issues with Windows 98.

Next you will get a screen saying that it will format the drive with FAT32 because the partition is larger then 2048 megabytes, Hit enter at this screen. After a while it will restart the system. Remove your disk before it does so. If you get a non-system disk or disk error, remove the floppy disk and hit enter.

After the reboot you will have to wait a bit, then a Wizard will come up. Hit next at the screen, or wait a second and it will proceed automatically.

In a bit you will get a regional settings menu. Just hit next here. At the next screen type your name on the first blank, and an organization (or just put home) on the second blank. Hit next. Now you will get a menu asking for your product key. The product key is on the back of the Windows 2000 CD case.

If you enter the key correctly you will then proceed to the Computer Name and Administrator Password menu. Erase the stuff on the computer name blank, and give your computer a name. This name will later identify your computer on the network.

It is vital to also choose a password for the administrator account. Choose something that you can remember easily, but isn't very easy to guess. When you are done hit next.

Set the date and time, and then hit next again.

After the date/time menu, setup will install some more components from the cd. Sit back and relax for a minute while it does its job. After a bit it will go to a performing final tasks menu and do some more installing. Sit back and relax for a minute while it does its job.

Windows will attempt to install basic drivers at this point.

At the completing the windows 2000 setup wizard, remove the windows 2000 disk from the CD-ROM drive and hit finish.

Windows 2000 will boot for the first time.

In a bit you will come to the Network Identification Wizard. Hit next.

Here you can set a security level for the system in some respects. You can choose to have it log on as a specific user every time, or require one for everyone. If you are not worried about security, just set it to log in as administrator every time. Click next, and then finish

After this you may get a "Windows has found new devices and must restart" screen. If so hit yes or ok at this prompt and wait while the computer restarts.
