The following advice is based on many years of experience. They are provided as a free service to our customers and visitors. However, Directron.com is not responsible for any damage as a result of following any of these advice. You are welcome to distribute these tips free to your friends and associates as long as it's not for commercial purposes.

 Important!

 1. To avoid the risk of electrical shock, always have your computer unplugged when handling computer components.

 2. Static electricity may damage computer components. Be sure you are grounded before handling electronic components. A grounded wrist strap is recommended.

1). Prepare the workspace:
Prepare a clean open workspace with a level work surface large enough for the motherboard.

2). Set Out the Motherboard :
Remove the motherboard from the antistatic bag. Lay the foam from the motherboard box on the workspace, lay the antistatic bag on the foam and then lay the motherboard on top of the bag. This combination will protect the underside of the motherboard but will still be firm enough to prevent the motherboard from flexing too much while the cooler is being mounted.

3). Check the Cooler:
Visually inspect the cooler. Check for any apparent damage. Verify that the tape protecting the thermal pad is intact.

Important! Don't remove the tape from the bottom of the cooler until just before the final installation of the cooler.

Check for fit. Compare the cooler to the motherboard to ensure that it will fit. Check to see that the fan wire will reach to the intended power connector, either the power connector on the motherboard or a connector from the power supply. Check that the electrical connector is the right type.

4). Remove the Heatsink Fan (Optional):
The fan can be removed to make it easier to mount the heatsink. Wear eye protection to prevent injury. Hold a thumb over one end of the fan clip so it won't spring away when released. Use needlenose pliers to pull the center of the clip down and away from the retention slot. Once tension is released, remove the clip. Repeat the procedure with the second clip. Remove the fan from the cooler and set the fan and clips aside.

Tip: Before removal, note the direction of the fan and the location of the fan clips.

Note: Be careful not to put pressure on the fan blades while removing or replacing the fan.

5). Trial Mount the Cooler on the CPU Socket (Optional):
Tip: Practice mounting the cooler on the bare CPU socket to get a feel for the process without risking damage to the CPU.

6). Install the CPU:
Install the CPU using the instructions provided by the CPU and motherboard manufacturers.

7). Practice Cooler Installation :
Conduct a trial mount of the cooler to the CPU. Leave the protection tape in place. Try to place the cooler squarely on the CPU so that it doesn't need to be adjusted after it contacts the CPU.

8). Clean the CPU:
For maximum cooling the CPU surface must be free from dirt, lint or grease. Clean the top of the CPU using alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

9). Install the Cooler:
Remove the protection tape from the thermal pad.

Tip: Thermal tape is only good for one use. When the cooler is likely to be removed and re-installed multiple times, it is recommended to completely remove the thermal pad along with the tape. Then replace it with high quality thermal grease, such as Arctic Silver.

Tip the cooler up to hook the rear of the heatsink clip over the rear middle lug of the socket.

Tip the cooler forward as horizontally as possible without contacting the CPU.

Important: Be careful not to rock the cooler onto the CPU while installing or removing it. The force from the clip against the rear edge of the cooler may damage the CPU. Set the cooler squarely on to the CPU. Ideally, the cooler should not need to be re-adjusted after contacting the CPU.

Check to ensure that the cooler is properly positioned. The cooler should be resting on all four of the CPU's rubber pads. The mounting clip should be lined up with the front middle lug on the socket. The heatsink clip should still be securely hooked on the rear socket lug.

Hold the cooler steady with one hand. Use the nutdriver or screwdriver to push the heatsink clip down and over the front socket lug. Don't allow the tool to slip off the clip as it may damage the motherboard. Verify that the clip is hooked securely onto both socket lugs.

Tip: Cover the tip of the screwdriver with tape to protect the motherboard.

Replace the fan on the cooler. Ensure that the fan is oriented to blow in the correct direction. Replace the fan clips using the same procedure that was used for removal.

Plug the fan into the power connector. Arrange the fan wire so that it will not fall into the fan and foul it

10). Removing the Cooler:
Caution: Avoid burns! Heatsinks can become very hot. Always check carefully and allow the heatsink to cool to a safe temperature before handling.

If the cooler needs to be removed, pull the motherboard from the case and place it on its antistatic bag and foam pad on the work surface. Remove the fan from the cooler.

Unhook the heatsink clip from the front socket lug. It may be necessary to have a second person use a small screwdriver and ease the tip of the clip off the socket lug. Do not allow the cooler to rock back while unhooking the clip as this may damage the CPU.

Lift and tilt the cooler back so the clip can be unhooked from the rear socket lug. It may be necessary to gently rotate the cooler back and forth while lifting to break it free from the thermal tape.

If the cooler will not break free from the thermal tape, do not force it. Remount the cooler, reinstall the motherboard and run the PC to heat the CPU and thermal tape. Once the tape is warm, remove the motherboard and try again to break the cooler free by gently rotating and tilting the cooler.

Note: After removing the cooler, always clean up the old thermal interface material from the heatsink and CPU. Then add fresh thermal tape or grease before remounting.
