Sound AssessmentPart VII in How to Build a Quiet PC with AMD 850MHz CPU
by Taliesin Akin
Objective
Measured with a dB meter, with the A-weight filter (to measure overall noise output), the total dB(A) of the computer is 26.4 dB(A) at two feet. 28 dB is the noise of a quiet room. This is much quieter than the other computers in the office, which measure 30 dB(A) and 31 dB(A) at two feet. This may not seem like much, but considering that the each increase in dB is a power of ten (28 dB is ten times 27 dB), this is a lot.
Subjective
After getting the PC running, I notice that it is much quieter than the average PC. The noise of the fans is audible, but much quieter than the average fan. Most of the noise that I hear is airflow, and not the fans themselves. The loudest components of the computer are the CD ROM drive and the 3.5?floppy drive. There’s not much you can do about the 3.5?drive, but these are becoming more and more useless and should really be phased out soon. Zip drives, by comparison, make much less noise. The hard drive is not totally silent, but much quieter than on the other computers in my office. As the spindle speeds of CD and DVD drives increase, they are also getting louder and louder. Some companies are producing drives with noise output in mind now. Try to find drives that are quiet.
