Chinese as a Second Language Class Chinese, a language spoken by more than a quarter of the population in the world, is said to be one of the most important languages to learn in the 21st century. Did you or any member of your family wish to learn this language? Hua Xia Chinese School is bringing the opportunity to our community for you to learn this beautiful and fascinating language. Beginning in January 2002, a class of Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) will be offered at Hua Xia Chinese School’s Sugar Land campus, located in the building of Fame Well Education Center at 2317 Settlers Way Blvd., Sugar Land, TX 77478. A course specifically designed for those whose mother tongue is not Chinese or not mandarin (pu tong hua), CSL will be taught by an instructor fluent in both Chinese and English. Classes are held on Saturdays over a semester of 15 weeks. Students begin by learning ping yin (a pronunciation system similar to the alphabet in English) and simple Chinese characters and move on to learning words, sentences, and conversational skills. Since the CSL class is taught in an environment where many Chinese-speaking children also learn to read and write in their mother tongue, students in the CSL class will have excellent opportunities to put what they learn into practice right away. Hua Xia Chinese School is the biggest weekend Chinese school in the Greater Houston Area. On its three campuses, there are nearly 700 students learning Chinese and other extracurricular courses on weekends.
