Shex: How to install Nvidia drivers with Debian Testing/Unstable.
Installing the Nvidia drivers is one thing that new users always stumble on, I ope this guide will make it easier.
These directions only work with Testing and Unstable. There is no version for stable of these packages at present.
One alternative is the nv driver, an Open Source driver with no 3D capabilities.
Step 1. Build and install the kernel module.
Run:
apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common
Then Run:
module-assistant auto-install nvidia
Step 2. Install the nVidia user-space libraries.
Run:
apt-get install nvidia-glx
Step 3. Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:
In the "Module" section, be sure that you have a line
Load "glx"
Comment out any lines that refer to the "dri" or "GLCore" modules.
Replace Driver "nv" or Driver "vga" with Driver "nvidia"
Step 4. Create a video group, and add to it any users that need to be able to use the display.
Run:
addgroup --system video
adduser $USER video
Step 5. Reboot Your system.
These steps are one way to install the nvidia drive it may not be the best way, but it is the easiest.
