Introduction

Hua Xia Chinese School, Inc. is a non-profit organization established in 1993 and one of the largest weekend Chinese schools in Houston area. Hua Xia teaches Pu Tong Hua (Mandarin) with simplified Chinese characters and Pin Ying. Hua Xia currently has about 1000 students in four campuses enrolled in Chinese, culture, and talent classes with about 10% annual growth rate. The School is operational year-round on Saturdays in three semesters, spring, summer and fall. It has 45 teachers and staff. With over 2000 registered students, parents, and teachers, the School is the largest community organization for Chinese from Mainland China and as such participates many community activities.

The administration of the School consists of the Board of Directors, the School Executive Committee, and the Parents Committee. The faculty at Hua Xia is professionally trained in Chinese language, culture, and education. All the faculty members have bachelor degrees and many have master degrees from American universities. We have fifty teachers and each has a minimum of three-year teaching experience. Many have taught for more than ten years. The teachers in math, computer, arts, music, dancing, and chess classes are all professionals and specialists. Many of them are well-known internationally.

We teach in Mandarin Chinese at twelve levels of proficiency. We teach Pinyin system (the phonetic alphabetic system) and simplied Chinese writing characters. Our curriculums emphasize all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We forus on conversation skills at the begining level and reading and writing skills at the more advanced levels. Chinese culture and history are incorporated into the curriculum of all language courses. In addition to language and culture courses, we also offer courses in math, fine arts, music, dancing, and chess at differentl levels to develop students' artistic talents.

With the blooming of Chinese economy, the need for economic and culture exchange and cooperation between China and other countries is growing rapidly. More and more people become interested in learning Chinese and Chinese culture, especially for the companies and people who have business ties with China. To meet the growing needs of learning Chinese, Hua Xia Chinese School also offers business Chinese classes, intensive Chinese classes, and classes on how to live and work in China. The contents and teaching hours for such special classes are flexible to accommodate students' schedules and needs. We can offer such classes during week days and weekends, on our site or at customer's on-site.
