SHEX: Junk Mail Management.
As you could imagine, we have our fair share of junk e-mails. The question is how to manage them with minimum effect on productivity.
The "unsubscribe" process via e-mail reply or web has just become too time-consuming for me. Since each e-mail may have different ways to unsubscribe, we often have to actually scroll down the junk mail and read the unsubscribing instruction! Well, the junk mail has just fulfilled the sender's purpose - making the recipient to actually read the content of the junk. Even then, the unsubscribing process may not work.
I have used two other, more efficient ways to deal with the junk e-mails.
(1) I heavily use the rules in MS Outlook Express to sort out the e-mails and delete the junk e-mails according to sender's info. This works very well, except it takes time to accumulate such rules and the rules cannot be imported/exported for back-up purposes. I have had to rebuild such rules a couple of times on one machine when the Outlook Express had some problems. Once the rules are set, you never see the junk e-mails.
(2) Recently I have "found" another quicker way to accomplish. Under Outlook Express Message, there is a "Block Sender" command that can help you to block the future e-mails from that sender's e-mail address with three clicks. This is faster than adding or modifying a rule. Unfortunately, you have to open the e-mail first.
There are perhaps other more efficient ways to manage the junk e-mails. (1) I always wondered if Microsoft could build in the MS OE an easier way to add an e-mail to the rules by right clicking on a message. When you right click on a message, a list of rules would show up and then you can simply add that new e-mail to certain rules you like. (2) I have read from somewhere there is a commercial software that helps people to manage this task. Are you aware of any? (3) Perhaps, I should explore the possibilities of blocking the junk e-mails on the ISP side so that the e-mails never show up on my desktop at the first place. That way, I don't have to worry about spending time setting up rules etc.
Last observation: Like it or not, junk e-mails are part of the Internet age. I have long since accepted the fact and can deal with them calmly no matter how many I receive every day. We may not stop them from coming, but we can manage them with the least pain possible.

Network
A friend of mine set up a network last month for a new company. He felt free to pick my brain. Which I totaly hated cause he was getting paid for it. I suggested sometype of email filtering, since most viruses come with .exe or .vbs (Visual Basic) file extensions. I recently noticed some newer file extensions .com and about 3 or 4 others. Theres got to be a way to filter emails out with these file extensions. There is no reason someone should be sending a person this type of file.
http://www.nipc.gov/warnings/alerts/2001/01-029-1.htm
"Exercise particular caution with respect to e-mails that contain attachments that end in .exe, .vbs, .bat, .scr, and .pif."
Okay so I looked it up the new virus file extenions are .bat, .scr, and .pif.
In addition people will label a file somthing like SoandSosResume.txt.pif this is not a txt file its a pif file.

lucky you, dr. michael, bec you have discovered the block options in OE. i use outlook 2000 and can only send unwanted emails to the junk list... i used ZoneAlarm and i properly configure it to do the filtering of emails.
fortunately, my ISP's mail program is on a secured server pawned with virus detection... and so before my emails are downloaded to my machine, i am sure the emails are already virus-scanned.
i wish microsoft includes that block option in the outlook...

Zone alarm
Zone Alarm is awesome. I hate to even mention it. Its like Gold. The two times I got a virus it alerted me right away that the virus was trying to open a server port. The name of the file program and the location. I never got a virus until late this year and then I got 2. Anyway once you know the file location its easy to just delete it and or look up virus definition files.

SHEX & FYI
this is a digest of what i read elsewhere online that may be helpful to interested parties... just before x-mas i contacted DMA and my junk emails were significantly reduced...
Some states and jurisdictions now provide legislation against unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE). A good source of information is your State's Attorney General's office or consumer protection agency. The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) also offers a free service, similar to its program for telephone and postal mailing solicitations, enabling consumers to opt out of UCE. .DMA members are required to purge from their mailing lists all e-mail addresses of consumers who have requested to be removed. More information is available from the DMA at:

Directrons mail servers may have KLEZ virus please scan them
Please check your mail servers and client computers for the KLEZ virus. I have had several messages recently quarantined by Norton 2002 as they have attachments containing the KLEZ virus and Norton has attempted to repair them but failed. The messages were titled things like, "Company Meeting" I have chosen to destroy the messages but if you need more info I am sure I can get it for you. I am sorry I don't have the offending address for you, however the persons Email address was listed on your Directron.com domain.
Thanks

If you get an Email with an auto execute attachment.
It will say
0 Run file from location.
0 Save file to disk.
Click on the X to close the pop up. Press delete to delete the email. It will be highlighted, dont click on it again or it will again try to open the attached file. It will delete the file. Go to the recycle bin and press delete or empty recycle bin.

I have given up one of my e-mail address. There are just too much crap I receive every minute. It's like 10-20 of them every 30 minutes. I think that e-mail address is probably on all of the junk e-mail lists in the world now.
I created a new e-mail address for my main e-mail now. It takes a while to let all of my contacts to know of my new e-mail address; but it's worth it.
The other benefit of the new e-mail address without the junk is when I am on the road, I REALLY do not have the time to comb through those junk e-mails through the web browser access to the e-mail server.
You have to think that engineers at Microsoft should have come up with a better solution for this serious problem by now. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
