Linux Hardware Guide: Output DevicesI wouldn't call a Monitor an "accessory" as much as a "nessesity", but
I'm grouping it with the other external things. We'll be covering Scanners,
Printers, and Digital Cameras also.
| Monitor
|
Now Linux doesn't require some special type
of monitor, and in most cases you won't need to worry about this at all.
But there is a possibility that you will need to manually input the specifications
of the monitor.
The important specs of the Monitor are the maximum refresh rates
and maximum resolutions. You can generally find the information on the
manufacturers website. If not, google for it.

| Scanners
|
Scanners utilize a lot of proprietary software,
and that means that it's really tricky to make drivers for them. The definitive
resource for Scanners on Linux is SANE
(Scanner Access Now Easy).
Besides SANE there is XVScan,
a scanning software for Linux, Parallel Port Scanners
under Linux, and USB Scanners
on Linux. |
| Printers
|
Printers also use proprietary software.
You should check Linux Printing
for more information. As they say, "Researching a printer purchase? Start
with suggested printers,
or browse the database."
There is also CUPS, the Common
UNIX Printing System. |
| Digital Cameras
|
Digital Cameras use the most proprietary
software of all three of these accessories. The best resource for Digital
Cameras is GPhoto.org. "gPhoto2 is
a free, redistributable, ready to use set of digital camera software applications
for Unix-like systems, written by a whole team of dedicated volunteers around
the world." See their list of Supported Cameras
