Linux Hardware Guide: Setting Up LinuxThis guide is to help you build a Linux system, not select a distribution of Linux. Nevertheless, it's important to understand the concepts behind Linux.Red Hat, SuSe, Caldera, they all run on the Linux Kernal, of which there is only one official distribution. The Linux Kernal is based on the concept that even numbers are stable releases, and odd numbers are developmental versions. The current stable version 2.4.21 and the current developmental version is 2.5.75. Therefore, it is important that you look for Linux distributions that contain the latest (stable) versions of the software applications. The following are common applications included in Linux, along with their sites so you can check the latest versions.
You can choose a Linux Distribution on your own, but I'll save you some work and list the homepages of the major distributions.
