News For Apr. 2004AMD CEO: "Dual-Core Opteron Will Shock the Hell Out of Everyone"
AMD Projects Dual-Core Chips for 2005!
(April 29, 2004)
One year has passed since the announcement of AMD Opteron processors. Looking firmly forward, AMD's chief executive officer is pretty confident about the future of his company's technology and is anticipating the next big thing with microprocessors - affordable dual-core technology that is going to hit the ground in 2005.
"We have roadmap that when you look 12 months out, it is pretty firm. You look 12 to 24 months, and it is almost firm. And then you look beyond that, and it is always subject to modifications of the market. When we look out to, say, the end of 2005, we are enabling customers to really create a tremendous breadth of product lines." AMD's CEO Hector Ruiz said in an interview to eWeek.
AMD sold around 40 thousand of AMD Opteron processors in 2003, according to Smith Barney's estimations, but the vast majority of such chips were intended for 2-way systems. The company managed to supply approximately 3200 processors for 4-way systems to power some 800 servers. While 4P, 8P and higher-end machines are not sold in massive quantities, they represent the most lucrative part of the market. But the customers who adopt enterprise-class machines with four or more CPUs have to be absolutely confident in technology they acquire and deploy.
"One of the most powerful things next year is going to be our dual-core product. To me, that is going to really shock the hell out of everyone, because it is going to be hardware-compatible, infrastructure-compatible, pin-compatible. I mean, people that have a 2P system can slap in a dual-core product and end up with a 4P system for the price of a 2P. That's been the biggest drawback, everyone tells me. What keeps them from going from a 2P to a 4P system? Its price," Mr. Ruiz continued. (ztj043004)

Intel Accelerates Dual-Core Microprocessors Introduction?
Johan Chip to Come Next Year
(April 27, 2004)
Intel is likely to accelerate transition to dual-core desktop chips by designing next-generation Pentium M processors code-named Jonah to fit not only into mobile, but also into desktop computers.
Quite some sources earlier indicated Intel's intention to introduce a processor architecture that would be used in mobile and desktop processors. Nowadays Intel offers Pentium 4 chips and derivatives for desktops and Pentium M microprocessors for notebooks because the Pentium 4 consumes too lot of energy and dissipates more heat for mobile computers.
However, earlier it was said that the unified architecture for different processors is to be introduced in 2006 or 2007. It was expected that the first similar CPUs from Intel for desktop and notebook computer will be Merom and Conroe, but DigiTimes web-site reported today that Intel's next year's Jonah processor will fit both in desktop and laptop PCs. Nevertheless, the timeframes for the Jonah are now said to be the 2H 2005 or the 1H 2006.
The code-named Jonah chip is projected to contain two Dothan cores and to be made using 65nm fabrication technology. The central processing unit is said to disable the second core when functioning on battery power and will enable both cores once the computer is plugged to power outlet. Thermal Design Power of Jonah is likely to be about 45W, while die size is expected to be 100 - 120 square millimeters.
The successors of Jonah are Merom, Conroe (2006) and Gilo (2007) processors, all featuring brand-new architecture with 64-bit extension technology. Conroe might become Intel's first dual-core IA32e processor for desktop computers. Intel's code-named Merom microprocessor, which is also going to have a breed designed for desktop computers, will support all the latest techniques from Intel, including Intel Extended Memory 64 technology (IA32e), La Grande technology, Hyper-Threading technology, Vanderpool technology and some other features aimed to improve CPU performance and extend usage patterns of PC. The Merom microprocessor is expected to contain two or more processing cores and 4MB of built-in on-die cache, which is unbelievable size for desktop chips.
It is not clear which advantages the Jonah chip will have in terms of functionality over Banias and Dothan microprocessors. (ztj043004)

Awaiting Launch Of The Pentium 5
(April 21, 2004)
INTEL "our friendly neighbourhood hardware giant" is once again making new waves in processor chip technology. Introducing the Pentium 5 the "Big P" of all processors is soon to be launched in mid October. So can we expect a whole new experience in pc technology.
The Pentium 5 processor will be available in speeds from 5.0 to 7.0 GHz. The P5's consists of multi threading which is the latest technology to be incorporated and is touted to be better than Hyper threading technology.
P5 features a 2mb of L2 cache and is constructed on a 90 nm process. Due to its unique design, the P5 can simultaneously take on multitasking of a number of programs very efficiently, with no hang-ups or system strain.
Initial price is expected between Rs.15, 000 to 20,000.
The P5 will be compatible with Windows XP 64bit (beta). The trail version can be downloaded from Microsoft for limited time period of 360 days. (ztj042104)
