SHEX: What to Do with an Old Computer?
About a week ago, I was sitting on 4 sub 500Mhz PCs. They were doing nothing, collecting dust. I decided to do something with those and here are some ideas for older PCs.
Webserver
Just add a NIC and put a Linux distro on it, and voila! My Celeron 466Mhz is enough to server my gaming clan's website over my 3MB cable line.
Router
Throw RockLinux Router onto a CD and floppy, and you have a router. No need for a hard drive, just make sure you have a bunch of NIC's lying around. My Pentium 200Mhz servers this purpose just great.
Dedicated DOS Gaming machine
Got those old games that newer operating systems can't support? I took my other Pentium 200Mhz and now I have a dedicated DOS gaming rig. It annihilates my AMD 3200+ in some games, DOS games obviously.
Kid's machine
Go ahead, give it to the kids. It's not worth much, so it's okay if they spill some juice on it and kill it.
Typing/Printer server
Throw an NIC in it, hook it up to the printer and have it serve the printer. Also use it as a typing machine.

Firewall
You can turn an old computer (I have a 486, with 64mb EDO RAM and 540mb hard drive) into a hardware-firewall, using a Linux distribution called SmoothWall. All you need is two network cards and voila. Upgrade it to two low-cost Gigabit adapters and you have a solution for the entire network, without slowing it down a beat.
Systems
And, as always, you can post a question on the Directron Help Desk! (by121404)
