The Third Operation Lan PartyThe 3rd One Is a Charm...
The OperationLAN was upgraded to a world-class location - Downtown Hyatt Regency, the largest hotel in Houston. The AC and electricity were both nice and efficient. The Exhibit Hall was roomy. Some players also enjoy the coffee shop and other amenities upstairs. Parents now have a nice place to wait.
For the first time, we had vendors setting up booths during the event. We welcomed AMS, AOpen, CaseArts, SnapStream, and Zalman. Their reps showed their latest products and interacted with our hard-core gamers. Don from Zalman drove all the way from California to attend this event. He said after the show, "I may bring my kids next time." (We are that good! :)
We gave away a total $5200-worth of products - about $1000 more than last event. So far we have given away $12,600 value of products. Our gamers appreciate the support from and the interactions with the vendors. Hopefully, our gamers will help sell more products for our vendors and give them feedback to design even better products for them.
We finished all the games at about 12:30am. I got home at 2:00am. That's a significant improvement from the last two events when I didn't get home until 6:00am. I just want to let our gamers to know that we worked hard to make it possible for you guys and girls to enjoy.
The attendance was down from the last two due to various reasons such as weather and the fact that many area schools already started the fall semester. Nevertheless, we believe this one is reasonably successful and we are well on the way to build up OperationLAN as THE PC network gaming event in Houston.
System Building Race
This contest is popular. Many people wanted to try their hands. However, we brought out only five cases for it. A drawing was done to select the "lucky five." Watching the five racing to assembling a computer was almost like a spectator's sport.
We video taped this event. The winner took about 15 minutes to finish the assembling work.
This is the first time we had it. We'll fine tune the rules for the next event and give more people a chance to compete. The idea behind this contest? We would encourage more system builders!
First Place: Quoc Nguyen
Second Place: Jon Gilbert
Street Fighter Showdown
Like the last two times, this event was again loud and attractive. The competition was tough. To save time, we did single-elimination. Here are the winners:
First Place: Jiaqi Chu
Second Place: Louis Yang
Battlefield 1942
First Place: Neal Richards
Second Place: Jeremy Ryder
Third Place: Scott McCracken
Case Mod Contest
We had four serious contenders this time. We chose two to win the contest:
First Place: Atta Shay (multiple mods)
Second Place: Vu Huynh (self-painted orange case)
Counter Strike
This is the first time we did double-elimination, which allowed more play time for every team. We had nine teams competing. Although Team TOG won again, we did notice that they have yet again different members in their team. Here are the two top finishers:
First Team:
Carl Zetterlund
Mason Dickens
Matt Dickens
Michael Nguyen
David Four
Second Team:
Craig Shannon
Raul Gonzalez
Ian McSpadden
Sam Eckhard
David Inkster
Congratulations to all the winners. Please don't forget to email the sponsors to express your appreciation and give you feedback about their products!
Our next event is in December! We promise more vendors and more prizes. We anticipate more than $10,000 prizes.
OpLAN #3 is moving to the Lower Exhibition Hall in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Houston at 1200 Louisiana Street. Starting hour has also moved back to 11 am. This means bigger place, better AC, more electrical power, better food/snacks, more play time for every one, earlier finish time, and most important of all, more fun. Hyatt Regency Downtown is claimed as the biggest hotel in Houston. Unfortunately it also means a higher cost. But we are willing to absorb the additional cost to set up a big stage for our BIG fourth one during the winter break in December.
Next Event: Date/Time: August 16th, 2003, Saturday, 11:00 am - 12:30 am. Let's have some fun before the school starts again!
Directron.com will host the third Operation LAN party, game tournament, and computer show. We gave away $1000 worth of products through raffles. For an average person, the chance of winning something may actually be much better through the raffles than the tournaments. One person won 7 prizes with 8 tickets last time.

We'll have a limited number of systems for rent at $30 per night, which is not sharable. Each player must pay separately. (Subject to change)
Registration: Seating is limited. Register now!
Notes: (1) You will have to pay for parking in the garages (2) Please notice the start time has been rolled back to much earlier to allow more time playing. (3) We will try to conduct the Zalman Street Fighter and Maxtor Battle Field at the same time to make these tournaments take less time. (4) We plan to turn the DFI Counter Strike to a doulbe-elimination format, which will allow more play time for all participants. (5) We have increased the entry fees for this event to cover increased cost of renting a mobile generator. To encourage pre-registration, we have set up a price difference for online vs. onsite registration.

We will have the lower Exhibition Hall. Parking will be free on the surrounding streets but you will have to pay $7 for the Garages. Click here for directions.
