Rice University Wiess House for President of RiceNovember 3, 2005, Reception at Rice University President's HomeWe were invited to Rice University President David W. Leebron and his wife, Y. Ping Sun's residence for a reception for 2005 winners of the Fast Tech 50 awards organized by Houston Business Journal. We were informed about two weeks ago that we are this year's winner of this award. The actual award ceremony will take place tomorrow at a luncheon in downtown Hyatt Hotel. We'll know our ranking among the 50 fastest growing high-tech companies then. Jason and I went there together. First of all, the house is very impressively large - 11,000 square feet. It's across street from the Rice University campus - the so-called Harvard in the south. Rice is the most prestigeous university in Texas, often ranked very high nationwide. The house was built originally by oilman Harry Carothers Wiess and his wife, Olga Keith Wiess in 1920. It was donated to Rice about 30 years ago. Rice renovated the house as Rice University president's residence about two years ago. The design of this house is similar to the White House in that the first floor is primarily public space while the second floor is mostly private living space. The first floor is used for many Rice events. The event was organized by Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, which, according to its director, is trying to follow Stanford's steps to build a "silicon valey" in Houston. We met quite a few people who work in the IT industry, who were also the first-time winner of this award. The reception gave us a rare opportunity to see such a beautiful house.
