Hope everyone who's decided to hunker down for whatever reasons pulls through all right. I thought about leaving this morning but the roads were just so crowded that I thought I'd probably get stuck on the road. So I'm in the same boat (hopefully not literally!) as you - watching the models and hoping they continue to track east.

Thank you all for the best wishes.
I am actually updating this post from the office now. How did I manage to go from Sugar Land to west Houston?
Peter called shortly after I returned home from my first attempt. He wanted to get a set of keys so that he can use the office/warehouse as shelter tomorrow. I told him that I can't get out. So he decided to go from Houston to Sugar Land instead. After about 30 minutes, he showed up at our door!
I asked him how he got through so quickly. He said the side roads are all open. Only the main ways are blocked. I told him that I don't have the spare keys with me. I had to come to the office to get a set of spare keys for him. So we decided to drive separately to the office.
Indeed the side roads are wide open. No traffic at all. However, highway 6 (south and north), 90 and 59 (going west) are still pumper to pumper. I got to the office in 25
minutes!
Here are a few pictures of the traffic I saw on the way to office.
The first pic is the intersection of Austin Blvd. and Highway 6. Highway 6 is the official evacuation route for people from the coastal area of Freeport. Amazingly, after two days of evacuation, they still didn't completely get out.

Here shows the traffic coming from the south on Highway 6. I can see cars as far as my eyes can see. And it's a very clear day!

This picture was taken when I was crossing the Highway 90 and the railway track. This road leads to Highway 59, which goes to South. Finally, people are realizing that you can't go north any more. With the change of Rita direction, going west on 59 is a good choice!
But, later when I went through 59, the south lanes are jammed! The north bound is now clear.
So is Beltway 8 North bound.

On the way to the office, I tuned to AM radio and listened to as many stations as possible. Here are some stories I have heard:
One lady called in saying that she left League City which is about 20 minutes away in Southeast of Houston. She left the office at around 4pm yesterday. It took her 20 hours just across down town to the northwest part of town on highway 290.
Another lady came from New Orleans area due to Katrina. Now she is listening to all the news and decided to evacuate this morning. Six hours later she is still stuck on the freeway. She was very thankful for Houston to give her a temporary home and she thinks Houstonians are wonderful. Now she just can't believe how the traffic jam has happened. She can't believe why the it took so long for the traffic control to reverse the highways. She calls the
highway a parking lot right now. You can't get off and you can't go anywhere. Many cars are abandoned once gas is run out. People are walking off the freeway.
People are starting to question the authority what is causing this problem.
As a technical person, I wonder the following:
(1) Why people don't have or use GPS yet? If they have GPS, they can easily find side roads and get out of the jammed freeway.
(2) People are not listening to the news? Houston, especially west Houston, is now on the weak side of the Hurricane. According to news channel 11 on TV, they predict that the sustained wind in Sugar Land would be only 45mph. Why these people from the coast areas are still trying to get out? Why not just find a friend or hotel in the big city of Houston now?
(3) Why the authorities and news organizations are encouraging every one to evacuate all at the same time? Can evacuation be done in phases? No one is going anywhere it seems.
I am sure there will be allot of questions after all is said and done about Rita.

What is amazing is Beltway 8 is free both ways. The Northbound was jammed for a whole day yesterday.
Notice that yellow car on the left side. Do you know why it was not moving? Because it is not moving!
It seems to be an abandoned car. I don't know the reason. My guess is that the driver run out of gas, can't go anywhere, and decided to walk off the freeway on their feet!

Posted 09/22/05 15:50 |
Then I saw Directron.com!
The parking lot is empty. Sam's car is in the front. It turns out that he came earlier to retrieve more plastic bags.
Isn't the blue sky beautiful? Don't you like our office?
Even though our office is closed, our website is still running! That's the amazing advantage
of the ecommerce. I bet we are still receiving orders right this minute. Since our server is
not located in Houston, I am sure we'll continue to receive orders just as the hurricane is
landing somewhere in Texas on Friday and Saturday.

Posted 09/22/05 15:54 |
With Sam's help, I decided to go up to the roof to do some last-minute Hurricane prep on the roof.

| Michael |
Posted 09/22/05 15:59 |
The reason is that I saw some tree branches reaching to the top of the roof yesterday when were trying to do some patching work on the roof. I thought we should trim those branches so that the broken branches will not damage the roof.

| Michael |
Posted 09/22/05 16:00 |
This is Sam cutting the tree branches.

We took turns shooting a pic for our memorbilia.
It's really hot on the roof. But I love the hot weather - since it's the hot air in Houston area that is pushing Hurricane turning to the east!

We were pleased with our work! The tree looks clean off the building now. (We'll see if this would have any impact).
When we were on the roof, Nancy called me. She and her family drove (correction: parked) on
the road for six hours and had finally gave up. Her kids were just impatient waiting in the
car on the freeway. I told her the good news about the shift of Hurricane. She now felt more
comfortable and wants to take a nap! She has been working and worrying since last night!
As I am typing this post, someone just called into the radio saying that they are traveling around 7 miles per hour trying to get out of town with his pregnant wife due in one week!
Then I hear police or firetruck siren breaking out outside of my office.
What a day!

This is a picture of our roof. According to the hurricane prep manual, we are supposed to take some before and after pictures.
We'll see how these AC units on the roof hold against the hurricane on Monday.
(Are you a little impressed by the size of our roof? I am sure you are not jealous of our weather right now. )

I am worried about two big trees in front of our building. I was glad that we didn't cut down these two trees during remodeling. Let's see if they will be cut by Rita.

And, as always, you can post a question on the Directron Help Desk! (dxy092305)
