I decided to drive to the office to check out Pete, his sisters, and dogs and our warehouse/office. On the way, the southbound traffic on Beltway 8 is already picked up. Many evacuees who left town must have decided to return at night. The first wave of their return has just arrived. I was driving on the northbound. Most people living in Galveston, Freeport, who evacuated to College Station, Austin, may choose this route to return to their home. I bet they are all anxious to see their sweet home and see if there is any damage after the storm.
However, remember: there is still no gas in almost any of the gas stations. About 1.5-2 million people left Houston in 24-36 hours. Now they will all try to come back at the same time. It'll be mad like hell again.

Great News - Pete and Directron.com are just fine!
As I got to the office, Pete and his sister are walking the dogs around the front parking area.

We did have a few "damages."
We saw this metal mesh that is part of the intake filter for an AC unit that got blown from the roof to the front parking lot.

Remember that big maple tree I was concerned about? We did trim it a little yesterday afternoon during our last-minute preparation.
However, that didn't prevent one big branch to break from the middle and lying on the exit drive way of our parking lot.

See where that branch came from???
From the sky!!!
Remember: This was caused only by 30-40mph wind in the office area. I can image how Beaumount, Port Author, Lake Charles, etc. look like now.

One of our neighbor's trees was foled entirely!

Is this piece of art or what?
No artist could have done better.

The fallen tree even blocked the monument sign for our neighbor.
I am glad to see the HPD patrolling the area! I didn't notice that police car when taking this picture.

After surveying the outside, I went inside to check.
Electricity - working
My computer - working
Network - working
Server - working
Internet access - working
AC - working
Phone system - working
Voice mail - working
Email - working
This is where I have been posting all these "damage assessment" pictures - my office as I can hear Pete's dogs balking madly.
Pete went to his sister's house to take a hot shower. There is no hot water here. His sister decided not to stay here after seeing what happened to our door. She went back to her house nearby to sleep. But her house didn't have electricity since 2am.
Lilly, Lin, and Terry showed up at the door. They are ready to undo allot of our warehouse preparation to get ready for business on Monday.

glad to see the office in good shape. hard to imagine what a category 4 or 5 hurricane can do on a direct hit when 30-40 mph winds can tear branches and trees stomps apart.
in missouri city things were quite calm, we didnt get any high winds and heavy rain til late at night, around 2am or so. even then it felt like any other thunderstorm we've had in the past. really lucked out of this one.
we also never had any power outtages throughout the night. only experienced a few outtages in the afternoon when the hurricane was nearing galveston.

During the preparation, we had to get ready for the worst. We covered isles and isles of products with plastic bags.

We have finally found a usage for so many plastic bags that were left from computer cases we opened to build systems. Aren't we pleased that we didn't throw them away? You never know when it is a rainy day.

Good job covering them up.

Adam came in from Katy shortly after Terry. His warehouse crew quickly removed all the plastic bags to get warehouse ready for business on Monday.

Any one wants a good video card or motherboard that survivied Rita?
I can now see some people making T-shirts that say "I survived Rita."
What about such a sign for your computers?

Oscar showed up with his diseal truck and ax. He cut off and removed that fallen branch quickly.

Diana and her sister Bilma cleaned up the left-over glasses from the broken front door.
Thanks to so many hard-working co-workers, Directron.com will be back in business in no time!
I called our window contractor. I got him on his cell phone after several calls to his business and pager failed. He and his family are okay from the storm. He said he would come to fix the door for us on Monday. I am going to measure the size of the door so that he does not have to make a second trip.
So cell phones are really making a difference!

Another piece of good news that is unrelated to Rita, but certainly pleased to report.
I received a notice on Wednesday just when the chaos started that Directron.com was awarded with the FastTrack50 award from Houston Business Journal. We don't know our ranking on this award yet. The award ceremony is on November 4th. You'll sure hear about it more later.
This is another sign of our dedication to our customers!

Hi Steve, cool design and idea.
A t-shirt or bumper sticker may be more popular.
Can you put a date and location like:
September 23, 2005, Houston
And, as always, you can post a question on the Directron Help Desk! (duck093005)
