SHEX: Segmentation Faults in Linux Caused by Hardware.
When compiling a program in linux, you can sometimes run into segmentation faults. It can mostly hit larger compile attempts like the kernel source, or xfree86, or gcc and sometimes the program will crash.
The sollution to these faults, is finding the problem, there are three possible sources that can cause this: The ram, the processor, and the power supply.
If it is one of these three, it is bad hardware and the hardware will have to be replaced.
The power supply can be checked as follows:
Check the voltage levels on your motherboard. This can be done in the bios of your motherboard, consult the manual of the motherboard to find how to do this as each motherboard is different (and there are more motherboards than I can list here)
Also if you have been through several hard drive failures and your computer turns off at random, it is reasonable to say it is the power supply.
To check the processor:
This is typically not checkable, but you can tell it's the processor by certain symptoms, including random system freezes where the system completely locks up and you have to reboot. A way to check this is to grab a benchmarking program and run it for a day or so and see if your computer freezes.
And now we are left with the final culprit; the ram. To check your ram: There's a free program you can download called memtest86 available at www.memtest86.com.
It takes a day or so to complete the tests, but it will tell you if the ram is your problem.
Again, if you find a problem with these, except for the voltage settings in your bios, your hardware will most likely have to be replaced.

One way to verify if problems are related to a specific component is to swap that component for one known to be working in another machine.
In other words, try using a different power supply if you suspect the current one is faulty. If you suspect the processor, borrow the processor from another machine to test -- etc.
Alben, thanks for your SHEX (Share Experience)
