What you will need: (1) RAM chip, or other victim that is soon to be modded. (2) Thermal adhesive AND thermal compound. (3) A few cotton swabs. (Very handy tools). (4) Heat sinks that are to be applied. (5) Some 600-grit sandpaper, or equivalent. (6) Rubbing alcohol, or substitute for cleaning purposes. How to properly install heat sinks using thermal adhesive: (1) The first step to ensuring a quality job is to be sure your mounting surface is flat and prepared to make the most of thermal conductivity. Take the 600 grit sandpaper, and LIGHTLY sand the tops of the ram chips. Don't overdo it, just enough to create a nice surface for the heat sinks to adhere to. (2) Then, take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, and clean the surface well. (3) Next, it's time to get dirty! This next step is VERY IMPORTANT. This step will make the difference between an excellent working job, and a piece of scrap. You must mask the edges of the chips to ensure NO adhesive gets on them. Arctic Silver mentions that you should take steps to ensure that does not happen, and they were not kidding! (4) After you have masked the areas, it's time to mix the medicine. Mix the adhesive in a 1:1 ratio, and afterwards, add 1 part Arctic Silver II. What this does is weaken the bond enough so that if you ever want to separate the two-glued parts again, you may have a chance. If you glue them without adding in the thermal compound, chances are you will break something trying to get them separated. Also, adding the compound to the mixture DOES NOT affect the thermal properties, so what have you got to lose? Be sure to work quickly, but not awkwardly, so the adhesive mixture doesn't start to 'set up' on you before you are finished attaching everything. Try not to glue the sinks on with more than is absolutely necessary. Also, be sure they are pressed down firmly on the surface they are being attached to. (6) While attaching, you will probably see the adhesive squeezing out of the side of the heat sinks (which technically means you used too much) and you will think "damn.... I’m sure glad I masked the edges!" That is what killed my card, and led me to write this up. After my card would only display a rather cool kaleidoscope of colors on my screen at boot-up, I did a closer inspection and found a couple memory pins had in fact been connected by the adhesive, and it's fry-city! (7) After about an hour or so, be sure to remove the tape you having masking your chips. This is more than enough time for the adhesive to 'gel' up, and not sag. But more importantly, you don't want the masking tape getting permanently glued in position. Be sure to let the setup cure for a few hours (overnight is best) and its overclocking party time!!!
