SHEX: Software Applications
Theres no where on the forum to discuss software applications. My Last decent job I was a software specilist.
Anyway If anyone has any questions about any software I have just about every software package known to mankind.
I got a program ysterday that overwrites DLLs in Windows XP to let you change the GUI sort of like windows Blinds but it dosent ues any memory. Its native.
The Program is called Style XP.

Excellent. Do you have anything for linux/ unix/ beos? Or are you strictly a windows person?

Unix Slot
NSA Secure Linux: Unidentified
Net BSD: Would not load
Free BSD: Would not boot, Trashed MBR
Linux Mandrake 8: Highest rating from websuspect
Mandrake 8.1:Trashed may need to redo.
Corel Linux: Old but good
Corel Wordperfect for linux:Failed Install Process
Slackware 7.1:Failed To Boot, Long install Process, A friend recomends Floppy Boot.
Star Office:Failed to Install comes with new distros, compatable with M$ Office.
Redhat 7.0: Okay Easy to install
Beos Trail user home Edition. Good stuff. Good support from BeOS.
Support for BeOS is at http://Bebits.com You can easily upload and install stuff to BeOS in BeOS.
I can repost instructions on how to get all this stuff for free under GNU user liscense. I was thinking a Forum Contest might be nice. Where by the user might get a free copy of Mandrake ISO. Example for the best answer to a Burbie problem.

UNIX
I'm a systems administrator on a UNIX cluster. I know Linux quite well, and do some kernel programming from time to time. I prefer Debian to the others, and I'm currently working on a custom distro that's designed with e-commerce security in mind that will power our new clusters going in to our new datacenter...
I must admit, I've never messed with BeOS, but I hear a lot of cool things about it.

What I found
I found the best way to configure Mandrake for DUN. Is during the instalation process configure the modem and dial up account name there. I couldnt get it to work any other way.
This where you configure the keyboard and the partition and everything.
Its a one shot deal so be sure to select whether or not your ISP uses a console. You select dialup verification or script verification. Enter your DNS IP ect.
Under a Shell account it will Dial up fine this way.
I also had some success using RedHat and Corel Linux to Dial into Home.att.net when I was using that last year.
Such an account will store the user name and password information in a word enabled file under the ISP service programs file.
Under some accounts the username and password file only works for EMail and you need this info in the ISP program file.
I used home.att.net file for a while but switched to a shell acount it was cheaper for me by about $10 a month.
I also found that Dial up Networking works better than Dial up to interent.
Sometimes PPP will work and if you are using DSL use PPPOE.
Man I wish I had DSL.
How tos
Linux tutorials are written in formats called how tos. The how tos are usually not very helpful. This is because Linux is free. Linux distros often compile the kernal together with a GUI and other programs you need to run a basic system and may incude free programs such as a web server such as APACHE.
Giving away perhaps millions of dolars worth of open software away is social engineering experiment. So many times in life we complain about how things are and dont stop to see how things could be. Maybe with a little effort we could reach the place where we would like thins to be and possibley make the world a better place.
Often alls it takes to get through a task in UNIX is a little introspective. Many times the process you need to work through is simular to windows and if you know a little bit about computers you can repeat the given tasks in a simular maner.
For Nemises
Gee I didnt know this post was growing.
I wish I had a real job, anyway this is as close as it gets.
Google uses redhat for its server farm.
If you are doing clusters you might be able to configure RedHat to backplane on the clusters. Or at least slide your networking files around or maybe even configure it to do that automatically. I am assuming you have user databases where you add and remove customer info around or add new server clusters.
They now Make BeOS for LInux. The way I understand it you start Beos in a Native partition and it somehow dumps the core OS and loads up BeOS. It was very stable and I could boot off of a boot disk and root windows files. Even when Windows would not start. It lives in its own file group.
Sometimes I kind of fize out so it might take a question or two to get me going.
One final word on UNIX DUN
Unix does not like software modems.
Hardware modems work much better. I have a ISA hardware modem and even than I could only configure it on Mandrake.
So A while back I bought a Serial Hardware modem which is the best kind of modem you can get for UNIX.
I could not find the appropriate cable anywhere so I got like a Belkin DB 9 cable from Office Depot. I had to modify it by removing nuts from the end. The cable is male on one end and female on the other. It will also work with any laptop running UNIX.

Software modems
In case you somehow got stuck with software modems I asked for these two modems to be lent/swaped out to tech support. They are both expensive. However I belive Micheal may be persuaded to trade you one for 100 power cords you have stuffed in a box in the corner of the tech shop.

If you are willing to invest $30 I recomend this Junk modem from software and stuff.

I was so excited the first time I dialed up on linux and started IRCing or surfing I almost pooped my pants.
I might be able to go fly to Directron and help you with things. We will have to see. I am a bit nervous and dont want to make someone mad or screw somthing up because than I would have to walk home.
