Via Technologies Inc. on Monday introduced an upgraded Apollo KT400A chipset for Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon XP processors, including the new Barton 3000+.
The Taiwan chipmaker said the new chipset uses an expanded array of prefetch buffers to reduce latency in the memory controller. As a result, officials said the chipset is 10% faster than the previous Apollo KT400 in 3D applications.
The enhanced single channel memory KT400A is poised to compete against Nvidia Corp.'s nForce2 AMD-compatible chipset which can support two memory channels.
The new Via chipset supports memory speeds through DDR400 and process bus speeds through 333MHz, according to the company. It has native support for two Serial ATA channels and also six-channel audio surround sound. The KT400A also supports AGP8X graphics and up to eight USB 2.0 ports, Via said.
Shhhhhh.....Hush Technologies Launches Quiet Computer
http://www.tomshardware.com/technews/index.html
Hush Technologies has announced its newest technology release, the Silent Mini-ITX PC for the Via EPIA platform. Its unique design has few moving parts, which translates into a longer product lifecycle and hardware cost savings. Because there are few moving parts, there is less heat generated and less need for heat dissipation. There are no cooling fans needed, which translates into a noticeably quieter computer with longer CPU life. The Silent Mini-ITX was created for use in medical departments, where reliability and platform stability are critical and can mean the difference between life and death.

Advanced Micro Devices is gaining share in the memory market from rival Intel and is poised to lure major computer makers to its new heavy-duty microprocessor, its chief executive said Monday.
AMD CEO Hector Ruiz said in an interview that the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company was prepared to announce key customers for Opteron, its line of more data-intensive chips due in April that is AMD's biggest new product in four years.
"We are working with all of the top five" computer makers, Ruiz said, referring to the preliminary testing and evaluation period that normally precedes the decision by any computer maker to build machines based on a new chip.

Chip giant invests in wireless nets to boost demand for Centrino products.
Bob Brewin, Computerworld
Intel has put its marketing muscle and investment capital behind two Wi-Fi public-access networks in the United States and another two in the U.K. to help build the infrastructure needed to support demand for computers equipped with its Centrino mobile processor. The new chip, which features built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, is scheduled for a splashy debut in New York on March 12.
Intel announced Monday that it has formed a joint marketing campaign with Toshiba Computer Systems Group to promote the use of Wi-Fi public-access "hot spots." Last week, Irvine, California-based TCSG launched its "hot spot in a box" project to install 10,000 Wi-Fi public-access nodes in the United States by year's end.

NEW YORK - Would you like super-sized Internet access with that burger and fries?
In a further sign of the spread of wireless Internet technology, McDonald's restaurants in three U.S. cities will offer one hour of free high-speed access to anyone who buys a combination meal.
Ten McDonald's in Manhattan will begin offering wireless WiFi, or 802.11b, Internet access on Wednesday, McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa Howard said.
New Internet speed record
6.7 GB of data traveled at a speed of 923 megabits per second.

A new Internet speed record has been set by scientists. Using the Internet2 network, scientists were able to send data from Sunnyvale, California in the U.S. to Amsterdam, Holland at a speed of 923 megabits per second. The Internet2 network is a network operated by a consortium of 200 universities which are exploring the next generation of the Internet. 6.7 gigabytes of data, the equivalent of two DVDs ("four hours of DVD-quality movies") was sent in less then a minute over a distance of 6,800 miles.
The experiment was performed in an effort to speed up the transfer of data that is associated with the study of particle physics. The data transferred during the experiment originated at The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The center was home to the first U.S. website. It is operated by Stanford University for the U.S. Department of Energy.
