SHEX: Video Splitter for TVs.
I have a reason to watch satelite and regular TV channels from local antenna on the same TV. I thought it would be nice to be able to combine the two signals into one to be connected to a TV.
I went to a couple of stores. Most of them sell only the video splitter in two or three ways. These cost about $4. However, I was not sure whether these would work since what I want to do is the reverse of what a video splitter does.
There is also a manual AB switch. Who wants that? It would beat the purpose if I have to get out of my bed to flip a switch every time I want to change between the satelite and the antenna.
Today, I found a device specifically designed for my purpose: Combining antenna and satelite signal into one. It costs $11+. I bought one. However, it didn't work as it was designed to! Only the antenna side gives clear signal. The satelite side does not. I suspect that the satelite may have special circuitry for the satelite signal.
I returned it and exchanged for a lower-cost, regular 2-way video splitter. I was glad to find out that the video splitter actually works in reverse!
Now I can watch satelite programs and the local channels through the same TV (with different remote control). And it cost less than the "special switch."
I wonder why the manufacturer of the video splitter does not promote their products in such a way. Didn't their engineers test it for such an application?

There are several brands for the splitter. Recoton is one of them. They are available almost every where - Walmart, Target, RadioShack, and even Lowe's.
Good luck and have fun!

I'm surprised that your satellite receiver doesn't have an "antenna in" jack on the back. It probably does have that. By connecting the feed from your antenna there you will have your local channels when the box is turned off.
Using diplexers (weird splitters), the ones that say SAT on one side and VHF/UHF on the other, are mainly used to get both signals through the house on one cable. These are very handy, but not for your intended use.
Your best option is to use the antenna jack on the back of your receiver. Most satellite receivers will even tune in the local channels, and you won't have to do anything but punch in (ex.) 07 for local 7, or 500 for a satellite channel.
The other very easy option is to just use RCA cables (the three - yellow, red, and white) for connecting your satellite receiver to your TV, and then use the regular coaxial cable from your antenna into the back of your TV. Then your local channels would be under the channel numbers on your TV, and the satelite picture would be on something like Video 1, or Input 1 depending on manufacturer.
Michael you would not belive this

But where I live in the getto the cable guy pulls splitters off of poles and houses and throws them in the street. Ive found two so far.
