VII. Conclusion and updatesImprove the cooling of your un-overclocked Thunderbird by Philip Bayer
Total solution, -20°C: Conclusive evidence that the Athlon 1.33 GHz can be made to run stable
Well, by making some minor modifications, I was able to bring my systems temperature down by about 20°C. This allows me to do just about anything I want with the computer without the fear of system failure. However, when my new Palo Alto case arrives, I will post the results of that upgrade. The case has been designed for cooling servers, and I am hoping that no modifications will be necessary.
Update 1:
I finally received the 120mm fans and fan-guards that I ordered in order to complete the modifications to the side panel of the chasssis. The resulting temperature is about the same. This is fine because the purpose of upgrading the side fan was to replace the loud and inefficient sleeve-bearing fan with a larger, slower and thus quieter ball-bearing fan. The noise level is a bit lower, and unlike with the sleeve-bearing fan, the dB level is unlikely to get higher with time.
Below are some pics of the finished product. Note that I also cut some air holes in the front bezel, keeping in mind aesthetics as well as air-flow. Click on the thumbnail to see the full-sized image.

Editor's Note: One additional step the author could have taken to reduce temperature would be to have replaced the heatsink/fan (HSF) with a better/more efficient one. This is perhaps the most common way people reduce their CPU temperature.
