SHEX: What Watch Do You Wear? And Why?
Watches have not been in the front of technology for a long time now. However, it's still one of the most frequently and widely used technology out there. It's interesting to know what watches you use and why.
Here is my story.
I have been a loyal fan of Casio Data Bank for more than 10 years. This is the only watch I wear. Here are the nice things about it:
(1) It records 30 phone numbers. A nice feature (that's less useful with the enhancement on functionalities in cellular phones).
(2) Dual time. It allows me to keep two clocks - very helpful when I travel across time zones. Also useful to know the time at another country.
(3) Five alarms. All work independently. You can remind yourself for birthdays, anniversaries, or other important days one year from now.
(4) Other normal features: Timer and Stop Watch.
However, I have to go through this watch once every other year or so. The problem is not at the watch itself but the belt. Yes, the damn belt.
I have never had to replace the battery; but the plastic belt lasts only two years or so. And it gets broken almost always at the same place.
Once it gets broken, I either lose the watch or can't find the replacement. Either way, I end up purchasing a new Casio.
I wonder if Casio design the belt this way, so that we have to keep buying the watch.
Changing the watch is like changing a cellular phone. I have to re-enter all those telephone numbers stored.
Oh, well, despite this strange drawback, I still love this multi-functional watch. Not necessarily for the look of it but for the nice functions.
In the near future, most of us would be wearing watches equiped with overclocked AMD CPUs with water cooling... Wow! That'll be cool.

Timex Expedition
I work in theatres and quite a bit in darkened auditoriums or backstage.
When Timex first mentioned the 'indiglo' I thought my life was set. Then I discovered a small problem it took me years to resolve. Everybody made analog watches and digital watches that lit up (yes I check casio and all the others).
Finally, just a few years ago I came across the timex ironman. An analog/digital combo watch. Sometimes I need the stopwatch so the digital is a must but (now this is going to sound silly) I just can't stand wearing a digital watch!
I usually glance at my watch to check how much time remains until some given point in the future. It is just so much faster to get that information from an analog watch.
There were only two problems with the ironman watches. 1) they were designed as sport watches so they came with plastic bands. A sweaty plastic band is slippery and down-right foul. I would always buy the watch and immediately have the band replaced with a good quality leather band.
2) when they redesigned it and took the buttons off the front it ended up with four buttons on the sides and trying to remember the combinations to do different things was irritating. It also has two time and date counters. Inevitably when I pressed the button to get the date, I was one "the other one"--you know the one that's danged near impossible to set. You can laugh about this but only if you don't own one of these watches. My brother in law bought one and had exactly the same traumas (karma for when he laughed at me talking about it.)
Just recently I found the new timex expedition. It has two knobs and a rotating bezel. The interface is far more intuitive and I think I'll be sticking with this for a while.

Well...
I have a NeonSpark electroluminescent watch that I bought for 20 quid from Cyberdog last time I was in London.
It's cheezy and plastic, but it has a neat blue light that flashes when I wave my arms around like a dorky Goth chick pretending to be a raver.
Oh yeah.
It's analog and has a second hand.
I used to have a Badtz Maru (DJ line) watch that was similar (plastic, analog, blinky blue lights)...until my boyfriend hijacked it. *sniff* I miss that penguin.

I'm currently using a Timex Ironman tri-althalon. It has a stainless steal metal band. The watch itself is over eight years old. I got it at the end of eigth grade (I'm now 23). I've changed the band a couple of times, and the battery once or twice now. But, I think it's on it's last leg. The indiglo fearture no longer works, I guess all the lumenescent material had been used up. And, if I try to use the stop watch feature, it resets the whole watch.
So, I'm looking for a replacement now. One of my problems is the size of my wrist. Most of the buckle type bands are so small that inorder for it to be comfortable, I usually have to have it on the last hole, which doesn't make it stay on very well.
I'll let you kow what I come up with.

Oh yeah, I frogot to mention,
I actually have two watches. The other one is an analog Seiko with a leather band that has no numbers, or even dashes on it. I wear it usually only when I am dressed up for something, like a performance.

Well, I was wearing a Tomb Raider limited edition watch that came with Tomb Raider the Last Revelation, but the battery died. It just so happened that the day before the battery died I had won a metal banded, blue faced slim case watch from FIC, labeled FIC on the face, at the AMD Tech Tour last year. So that's what I'm using now....
