This document will show you how to set up a wireless network at home using the Linksys WRT110 RangePlus Wireless Router.

Also, you will need to locate your existing internet router. This device (either a Cable modem or DSL Router) will have 2 connections. The first connection is an ethernet cable that connects the internet router to your PC. The second connection will be a cable that connects the internet router to a wall jack. If it is a cable modem, it will be a coaxial cable that connects to the wall. If it is a DSL Router, the second connection will be a phone cable that connects to the wall.

Step 1.

Insert the CD. It should start automatically. Click the button labeled “Start Setup.” This will start the “Setup Wizard” which will allow you to easily configure your WRT110 Router.

Step 2.

Click “Next.”

Step 3.

Click to accept the license agreement and then click “Next.”

Step 4.

The WRT110 Setup Wizard will now look for network connections on your PC. Select your ethernet network connection and click “Next.”

Step 5.

Next, it will check to make sure the network connection you selected is enabled and working. If the check is successful, click “Next.” If not, click “Back” and restart Step 4.

Step 6.

Once the Setup Wizard has verified your network connection, you will be prompted to disconnect your PC from your existing internet router. Find that first connection, a cable that runs from your internet router to the back of your PC. Disconnect this cable from the back of your PC and connect it to the WRT110 Wireless Router. Use the port with the yellow “Internet” label. When you are finished, the WRT110 Wireless Router will be connected to your existing internet router. Click “Next.”

Step 7.

Find the blue ethernet cable that came in the box with your WRT110 Wireless Router. Connect it to port 1 on the back of the WRT110. The other end will connect to the ethernet port on the back of your PC. This will be the same port on your PC to which the internet router was previously connected. Click “Next.”

Step 8.

Connect the power to your WRT110 Wireless Router and wait for it to power on completely. It should take at least a minute.

Step 9.

When the Setup Wizard detects that your WRT110 is running, it will begin the configuration process.

Step 10.

As part of the configuration process, the Setup Wizard will attempt to automatically detect your internet connection and configure the WRT110. In the example below, the auto-configuration has failed. If you encounter this problem, choose the type of internet connection you have or select “I don’t know.”

Step 11.

Click “Next.”

Step 12.

Create your router password. It is a good idea to change the default password of “admin.”

Step 13.

Create the network name (or SSID) for your wireless network. This name will be visible to anyone nearby with a wireless adapter, so make sure it doesn’t reveal any personal information. In this example, we chose “banjo” as our SSID.

Step 14.

Choose the security level for your wireless network. “Higher Security” is recommended. When the choice is made, the WRT110 router automatically generates a security key (or password) which you will need to connect to the wireless network. If you prefer, you may create your own password.

Step 15.

This screen presents the current settings. You are prompted to save them to a file on your desktop. Click “Next.”

Step 16.

The router is being configured.

Step 17.

The WRT110 is configured! Click “Next” to complete.

If auto-configuration in Step 10 was successful, congratulations, you’re ready to use your Linksys WRT110 RangePlus Wireless Router.!

If auto-configuration in Step 10 failed, please continue with the following steps:

Step 18.

Because the WRT110 did not correctly identify our internet connection (Step 10), manual configuration is necessary. To do this, you will need to open a web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar as shown below. After this is entered, hit the “Enter” key.

Step 19.

The WRT110 router will now prompt you for the password you created in step 12. It is not necessary to enter a user name, just a password. This password should have been saved to a file in step 15. If you have forgotten the password, look on your desktop for a file called “Network Security Settings”. Enter the password and press “Enter” or click “OK.”

Step 20.

This is the screen you will see once you have successfully logged onto your WRT110. First, we will need to specify the “Internet Connection Type.” This is the topmost selection box.

If you have a Cable modem (that is, if your internet access is provided by your cable company), the correct choice is most likely “Automatic Configuration – DHCP”.

If you have a DSL connection, the choice is probably PPPoE. A username and password will be required. If you don’t remember it, review the documentation provided by your DSL Company or contact their support for assistance.

After specifying the “Internet Connection Type,” click on “Save Settings” at the bottom.

Step 21.

Next, click on “Status” at the top right of your screen. Below is the screen that will appear. Look at the information under “Internet Connection.” If the fields here all have the values “0.0.0.0” (as shown below), then the internet connection is not working. Click the “IP Address Renew” button and see if the values change. If, after a few moments, they do not change and still show “0.0.0.0,” then you will need to reset your internet router. Please note, you will need to reset the internet router and NOT the WRT110 Wireless Router. Find your internet router and look for any button labeled “reset” and press it. Sometimes this button is recessed and you may need a paper clip or a thin-tip item to press the button. If you cannot find a reset button, disconnect the power cable. If it has a battery, remove it. Leave the internet router off for 30 seconds and then reinsert any battery and reconnect the power cable.

After resetting your internet router, click the “IP Address Renew” button. The “0.0.0.0” values should disappear and be replaced with numbers. When this occurs, you are ready to use your wireless network.

Connect to Your Wireless Network.

Before you begin, it would be a good idea to make sure Windows supports the strongest level of Wireless Security. Please download and install the update found on this link:

Step 1.

Install your wireless network adapter. The procedures for this will vary from model to model. After you have installed your wireless adapter, you are ready to connect to a wireless network. In Step 13, we created a wireless network called “banjo” on the WRT110. Use the software utility that came with your wireless adapter to find and connect to the “banjo” network. In the example below, we will use Windows XP configuration utility to connect. Your wireless adapter may install software that replaces the method illustrated below; however, the procedure is the same.

First, open Windows Control Panel.

Step 2.

In Control Panel, open “Network Connections.”

Step 3.

Find the icon labeled “Wireless Network Connection” and right click with your mouse.

Step 4.

From the menu that appears, select “View Available Wireless Networks.”

Step 5.

A list of one or more wireless networks will be shown. These are all the wireless networks seen by your wireless adapter.

Step 6.

Look for the network name you created in Step 13. In this example, “banjo” is our network name. Select it and click on the “Connect” button at the bottom.

Step 7.

You will be prompted for the “Network Key” created in step 14. Enter the Network Key and click “Connect.”

Step 8.

After a few moments the screen should refresh and show that you are connected. You should now be able to browse the internet.
